- January 1: Ellis Island in New York Harbor is established as a processing station for immigrants bound for the United States .
- November 8: Democrat Grover Cleveland , ousted from office four years ago, defeats Republican incumbent Benjamin Harrison and James B. Weaver of the Populist Party in the United States presidential election . This makes him the only US President to enter the White House for a second time.
Asia
- April : In Siam , Prince Damrong Rajanubhab becomes head of the Mahatthai Ministry, which he transforms into a European-style Ministry of the Interior in the years that follow. This marked the beginning of the comprehensive modernization and centralization of the administration of Siam and thus the basis for today's Thai state.
- July 3: José Rizal founds the organization La Liga Filipina with the aim of peacefully fighting for independence or at least the greatest possible autonomy of the Philippines from Spain. The organization will be banned as early as July 6th.

- July 11: A pocket of water erupted from inside the Tête Rousse glacier on Mont Blanc , killing over 200 people in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains .
- August 14: A cholera epidemic begins in Hamburg . Unfiltered drinking water from the Elbe and unhygienic conditions in the slums favor the spread of the bacillus. Over 8,600 people die in the following weeks.
- October 10: British passenger liner Bokhara sunk in a typhoon in the Formosa Strait west of the island of Taiwan . 125 passengers and crew drown.
- October 27: The British passenger liner Roumania hit the rocky shore off Peniche on the Portuguese coast in storm and fog and broke up. 113 people die, only nine survive.
