Peter Nicolai Arbo (born June 18, 1831 in Drammen , Norway , † October 14, 1892 in Christiania , Norway) was a Norwegian painter .

Life

In 1849 Arbo, son of the headmaster Christian Fredrik Arbo (1791–1868) and his wife Marie Christiane von Rosen , studied at the Royal Friedrichs University in Christiania. Then he went to Copenhagen , where he was taught at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in 1851/1852 and by Frederik Ferdinand Helsted . From 1852 to 1855 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , especially with Karl Ferdinand Sohn . In 1857/1858 he was a private student of Emil Hünten . He maintained contacts with Adolph Tidemand and Hans Fredrik Gude . From 1857 to 1861 he was a member of the Düsseldorf artists' association Malkasten . In 1863 he moved to Paris , where he lived with interruptions until 1874. Then he settled in Christiania.

Arbo specialized in motifs and images of the history of Norway and Nordic - Germanic mythology . His most popular images are Asgardsreien (1872), which for the cover of the album Blood Fire Death band Bathory was used, and Valkyries (1865). Many of his pictures are considered to be important contributions to Norwegian national romanticism .
