- 217 BC BC : In the battle of Raphia , the decisive clash of the Fourth Syrian War , the Egyptian army under Ptolemy IV defeated the Seleucids under Antiochus III.

- 1053 : At the Battle of Civitate , the Normans, led by Richard von Aversa , Humfred von Hauteville and Robert Guiskard, defeat a superior papal army. Pope Leo IX is taken prisoner and has to recognize the Norman possessions in southern Italy .
