Margarita Xirgu Subirá ( Margarita Xirgu de Ortín , Margarida Xirgu ; born June 18, 1888 in Molins de Rei , † April 25, 1969 in Montevideo ) was a Spanish-Catalan actress .

Life

Margarita Xirgu made her debut at the Teatro Romea in Barcelona in 1906 as Blanca in the play Mar y cel by the Catalan writer Ángel Guimerá . In 1908 she performed with great success in the play Joventud de princep at the Teatro Principal . Her first major film role was in Fructuós Gelabert's silent film Guzmán el Bueno the following year . She played in other films, but essentially remained a stage actress.

In 1910 she took part in the premiere of Oscar Wilde's Salomé at the Teatro Principal in Barcelona . In 1911 Guimerá wrote the piece La reina joven for her . In the same year she founded her own acting company, with which she toured South America in 1912. In the next few years Xirgu played successfully in world premieres of works by Benito Pérez Galdós , Jacinto Benaventes and Eduardo Marquinas . In 1927 she appeared in Barcelona in the world premiere of Federico García Lorca's play Mariana Pineda, set by his friend Salvador Dalí . Later she also played in García Lorca's pieces Yerma and La casa de Bernarda Alba . Also, Rafael Alberti and Manuel Azana wrote pieces for them.

Her political left involvement brought Xirgu increasingly into trouble. In 1937 she was elected as a delegate to the Catalan government in exile in Montevideo. In 1940 she was exiled by the Franco government. She became a Uruguayan citizen and in 1950 took over the management of the drama school in Montevideo, which later got her name. Xirgu brought plays by William Shakespeare ( Romeo and Juliet , Macbeth ), Jean Giraudoux ( The Madman of Chaillot ), Molière ( Tartuffe ) and other important authors to the stage.

In 1958 she recorded La casa de Bernarda Alba for Argentine television.

In 1910 she married her childhood sweetheart Josep Arnall. Their marriage lasted 26 years until Arnall's death in Havana in 1936 . Xirgu died on April 25, 1969 during an operation in Montevideo. In 1988 her remains were returned to their homeland. The artist found her final resting place in her hometown of Molins de Rei .
