Rafael Alberti Merello (born December 16, 1902 in El Puerto de Santa María , Cádiz province , † October 27, 1999 in El Puerto de Santa María) was a Spanish poet .

Life

Alberti is part of the so-called Generación del 27 , named after the 300th anniversary of the death of Luis de Góngora , whose works she wanted to make better known.

As a teenager he first devoted himself to painting before finally devoting himself to poetry . Probably best known in Germany is his first volume of poetry, Mar y tierra , later renamed Marinero en tierra (German renamed from “Sea and Earth” to “Sailor on shore leave ”) and his memoirs La arboleda perdida (German “The lost grove "). He also wrote a few plays .

After the republican forces were defeated in the Spanish Civil War in 1939 , he went into exile with his partner, the poet María Teresa León Goyri (1903–1988), to Argentina , where he stayed until 1963 after the military coup . They have a daughter, Aitana Alberti , who was born in Buenos Aires in 1941. After a few years in Italy , he returned to democratic Spain in 1977 and also sat in parliament for the communist party .

In 1925 he received the Premio Nacional de Poesía (Spanish National Prize for Poetry) for Marinero en tierra (1924), in 1964 the International Lenin Peace Prize , in 1981 the Premio Nacional de Teatro and in 1983 the Cervantes Prize ; 1995 honorary doctorate from the Polytechnic University of Valencia . In 1975 he was elected an honorary foreign member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters .
