The Instituto Cervantes [ instiˈtuto θerˈβantes ] was founded in 1991 by the Spanish state with the aim of promoting and disseminating the Spanish language and promoting the culture of Spain and all Spanish-speaking countries abroad. The institute is a non-profit and public institution. It is the Spanish equivalent of the Goethe Institute . Its headquarters are in Madrid and Alcalá de Henares , the birthplace of the writer Miguel de Cervantes . The Instituto Cervantes is the largest institution for the Spanish language in the world. There are more than 70 centers on five continents.

There are six Cervantes Institutes in German-speaking countries: Berlin, Bremen, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich and Vienna.

Spanish lessons

The institute offers language courses tailored to individual needs for anyone who wants to learn or improve their Spanish. Language courses are offered on six levels with increasing difficulty, which are tailored to the language use skills of the participant to be acquired in the course.

Teacher training

In the courses, teachers improve their language skills and perfect their teaching methods. The advanced training courses are also open to all graduates and students wishing to acquire an additional degree in Spanish as a Foreign Language. The Instituto Cervantes has set up the advanced training center for Spanish teachers, Centro de Formación de Profesores de Español, at its headquarters in Alcalá de Henares (Madrid), which coordinates the training of teachers taking into account their methodological wishes and ideas.

The institute's libraries are used to get to know the Spanish-speaking culture.

You have over a million media in various formats. Language students, teachers, journalists and anyone who wants to learn more about Spanish-speaking culture visit the libraries regularly.

The institute's libraries in Germany are located in the cities in which this institution has a seat, i.e. in Berlin , Bremen , Frankfurt am Main , Hamburg and Munich . Together they have an inventory of more than 80,000 media. The professional focus is on the Spanish and Latin American language and culture. Most of the stock media is in Spanish, although some documents can also be found in German and in the other official languages ​​of the Spanish state ( Catalan , Galician and Basque ). The focus is on literature, film, Spanish as a foreign language and music.

But there are also works from the fields of history, geography, biographies, encyclopedias and dictionaries, social science writings, children's and youth literature as well as comics, art, architecture and photography, all of which refer to the Hispanic context. Furthermore, there is also a collection of journals and a collection of documents dedicated to those writers whose names the respective libraries bear. A small section offers literature on the subject of Spanish-German relations.

It is possible to borrow most of the inventory and take it home with you. Each individual library has interlibrary loan access to the network of libraries of the Instituto Cervantes (RBIC). An information service, Internet access in the reading rooms, WLAN, user advice and cultural events (book presentations, book reviews, etc.) are also offered.

The digital offer of the libraries focuses on the online lending and downloading of e-books and audio books as well as the inspection of electronic media (databases, digital press, etc.).

Cultural program

The institute's cultural institutes promote culture in its diverse forms of expression such as literature, visual arts, film, performing arts, music and philosophy.

The institute works with the cultural institutions in Spain as well as with the institutions at the various locations. This gives us the opportunity to get to know the various aspects of Spanish-speaking culture that are of particular interest.

Centro Virtual Cervantes

Inaugurated in 1997 by the Instituto Cervantes, the Centro Virtual Cervantes is dedicated to the Spanish language and Spanish-speaking culture.

Spanish language diplomas

The Spanish language diploma DELE is the official certificate with international recognition that certifies the knowledge of Spanish as a foreign language. It is issued by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education.

Partner institutions of the Instituto Cervantes

The association of partner institutions (Red de Centros Asociados) includes language schools and institutions that teach Spanish and whose quality has been checked by the Instituto Cervantes. In Spain, over 100 institutions are recognized as partner institutions (Centros Acreditados por el Instituto Cervantes). Outside Spain, around 30 institutions are recognized (Centros Asociados al Instituto Cervantes). In countries of the European Union there are Centros Asociados in Germany, Great Britain, Ireland and Portugal. In German-speaking countries, there are partner institutions in Germany and Switzerland.
