El Puerto de Santa María is a municipality in southern Spain at the mouth of the Río Guadalete in the comarca of Bahía de Cádiz ( Bay of Cádiz ). The city forms the southern end of the " Sherry Triangle".
The locals usually only refer to the place as " El Puerto ". Many residents of Seville and Madrid spend their summer holidays here due to the fresher coastal climate. In the city there are many of the sherry bodegas (including 501, Terry, Osborne ) as well as many "Freidurias" and "Cocederos", in which seafood is offered fried and cooked for direct consumption . The city was the starting point for Christopher Columbus' second expedition to America .
The Luis Goytisolo Foundation , located in the rococo palace Palacio de Villarreal y Purullena from the 18th century, organizes annual symposia on contemporary Spanish narration. The place has a larger Corrida de Toros arena near the city center.
