The Bay of Cadiz is a bay on the Atlantic coast of Spain . It is named after the city of Cádiz , which lies on the peninsula protruding into the bay.

location

The bay is divided into two parts. The larger northern part is surrounded by the cities of Rota , El Puerto de Santa María and Cádiz. The rivers Rio Guadalete and Río San Pedro flow into the bay here. The southern part is separated from the northern part by the Isla del Trocadero . In the southern part of the bay are the cities of Puerto Real and San Fernando . The natural park Parque Natural de la Bahía de Cádiz also extends here . The narrowest part of the bay has been spanned by the Puente José León de Carranza bridge since 1969 and by the Puente de la Constitución de 1812 since 2015 . The national roads CA-35 and CA-36 lead to Cádiz via them.

history

Historical map (around 1888)

In the Bay of Cadiz was founded in 1587 a part of the Spanish Armada in an attack by Francis Drake captured, burned or sunk (→  disruption of preparations for the Spanish invasion ). In doing so, he inflicted considerable damage on the Armada, forcing the Spaniards to postpone the invasion of England by one year (→  Spanish Armada ).

Furthermore, the bay became famous through the Battle of Trocadero , in which the French army under the Duke of Angoulême took the Trocadero fortress in front of Cádiz on August 31, 1823 and then conquered the city. The French invasion of Spain was ordered by Charles X in order to free the captured Spanish king from the hands of the constitutional revolutionaries and restore absolute monarchy .

Today the shipping line is being dredged in the Gulf of Cádiz. In addition, numerous parts of shipwrecks , cannon balls, old coins, etc. are lifted.
