The Isla del Trocadero is an island in the Bay of Cádiz , near the southern Spanish city of Cádiz in Andalusia .
location
The Isla del Trocadero is separated from the mainland by the Caño de Trocadero, 3.4 km long and 35 to 150 meters wide. The island is 4.3 km long and a maximum of 1.0 km wide, and has an area of 5.25 km². It is located in the southern part of the Bay of Cadiz , in the southwest of the port city of Puerto Real , between the estuaries of the Río de San Pedro in the north and the Caño de Sancti-Petri in the south.
North of the island, the N-443 national road runs from Puerto Real to Cádiz. The industrial area Polígono El Trocadero and the driveway to the main road called El Trocadero indicate the close proximity to the island.
history
The former fortress Trocadero was the focus of the Battle of Trocadero in 1823. This ended with the storming of the fortress by French troops and sealed the end of the Spanish Revolution .
Protected area
Isla del Trocadero is part of the 10,000 hectare protected area and natural park Parque Natural de la Bahía de Cádiz . The entire area consists mainly of marshland, beaches, reed fields and dunes. It is an important wetland habitat and landing zone for migratory birds for the area.
The following bird species are found on Isla del Trocadero: gannets , storks , cormorants , great crested grebes , gulls , flamingos , terns , white-tailed eagles and avocets .
Use of the island
The island can be reached from the ports of Puerto Real and Matagorda. It is particularly suitable for bird watching. In winter, hibernating water and sea birds and various species of migratory birds can be observed during migration .
The island is also visited by hikers , windsurfers and sailors . Small parts of the island are used for salt production.
