Location of the municipality

Jimena de la Frontera is a municipality in the east of the province of Cádiz in Andalusia ( Spain ). The 6951 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) are spread over the town center and the districts of San Pablo de Buceite, Estación de Jimena (with the train station) and San Martin del Tesorillo, which belong to Jimena. The place is in the Comarca of Campo de Gibraltar on the edge of the Los Alcornocales Natural Park on the Ronda - Algeciras road and is one of the starting points for visits to the park.

history

The place dates back to prehistoric settlement, as evidenced by the Bronze Age rock carvings in the nearby Cueva de la Laja Alta cave . During the Roman era, Oba, or the Roman Jimena, minted its own coins. The Moorish Ximena was part of a system of fortifications between Moors and Christians that stretched from Algeciras to Torre Alháquime.

On October 2nd, 2018, the new community of San Martín del Tesorillo was founded from parts of the community of Jimena de la Frontera .

Sights and culture

The Castillo de Jimena de la Frontera can be visited and offers a beautiful view of the place.

Another attraction in the place are the ruins of an ammunition factory, the Real Fábrica de Artillería de Carlos III . The factory was founded in 1777 by Charles III. erected to make cannonballs - especially for use in America. However, the water supply from the Río Hozgarganta , which dries up in summer, proved so unreliable that operations were stopped again in 1786. In addition to the factory, there are the extensive canals along the river bank, through which the water was directed to the factory.

The cultural highlight is the international music festival that takes place every July.
