Life

At the age of 19, Carl Frederik Aagaard, son of the master shoemaker Ole Pedersen Aagaard (1792–1865) and Anna Ursula Thrane, née. Winchler (1794–1872), as a student at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen . He studied with the decorative painter Georg Christian Hilker (1807–1875) and also worked with his older brother Johan Peter (1818–1879) as a xylograph and etcher . Then he left the academy, devoted himself to landscape painting from 1853 and became a student of Peter Christian Skovgaard (1817–1875). According to Aagaard's own statements, this had the greatest influence on him. On July 1, 1858, Aagaard married Anna Emilie Eline Pio (1836–1929), daughter of the horn player Pierre Theodor Pio, in Kirke Saaby on Zealand .

As Hilker's assistant, Aagaard created wall paintings in 1858/59 in the agricultural college and in 1860 in the University of Copenhagen . Furthermore, in collaboration with Heinrich Hansen in Roskilde, he carried out decorative work in Christian IV's chapel belonging to the cathedral there . He created independent decorative paintings in the Dagmartheater and in 1874 in the Royal Theater in Copenhagen and from 1877 in Frijsenborg's forest chapels .

As a landscape painter, Aagaard first presented works to the public with great success in 1857 and won the Neuhausens Prize with Fritvoksende Markblomster . In 1865 he was awarded the Sødrings Prize for the autumn morning landscape painting in Jægersborg Dyrehave , which was acquired for the Royal Picture Gallery in Copenhagen. In 1866 he exhibited in Stockholm . In the years 1870/71 and - now with the support of the Ancker Scholarship - 1875/76 he went on extensive study trips to Italy . In 1876 he also visited Norway . Aagaard, who had become a member of the Danish Art Academy in 1874, brought back many sketches from these trips that later formed the basis of his oil paintings in his studio .

Aagaard mostly did not achieve the expressiveness of his teacher Skovgaard in his landscape paintings, but gained considerable popularity in the course of his 40 years of artistic activity. His forest landscapes and his beach pictures with motifs from Møn and Hellebæk are particularly significant . He has been awarded numerous medals and prizes; In 1892 he was honored with the title " Professor ". He died in Copenhagen on November 2, 1895 at the age of 62.
