  • April 30th : The first Venice Biennale opens as I Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte della Città di Venezia in the presence of the Italian royal couple Umberto I and Margherita di Savoia . The Palazzo dell'Esposizione was built especially for the exhibition in winter. The international exhibition of Italian art is to take place every two years in Venice from now on, by decision of the city council .

  • November 27th : In his will, Alfred Nobel decrees the establishment of a prize for the categories of physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine and literature. In addition, each year someone should be honored who has worked especially for the fraternization of peoples, the abolition or reduction of armies and peace.
  • The Austrian psychologist Adolf Jost publishes the pamphlet The Right to Death and thus triggers a discussion about euthanasia in German-speaking countries.

  • April 27 : The wall of the Bouzey reservoir (France) breaks. The catastrophe results in between 86 and 200 deaths.
  • around April 11th : The Spanish cruiser Reina Regente sinks in a storm on the way from Tangier to Cadiz. 402 cast members are killed in the accident. It is the Spanish Navy's worst disaster in peacetime.
