- 1793: During the French Revolution , the looting of the royal tombs of Saint-Denis in the Saint-Denis basilica in Paris begins . Over a period of several weeks, the corpses are removed from the coffins and buried in a mass grave.
- 1806: Franz II resigns the title of Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation and at the same time declares the empire to be extinguished in order to rule out a possible election of Napoleon as his successor. The empire ceases to exist after 844 years.
