Stéphane Peterhansel (born August 6, 1965 in Échenoz-la-Méline near Vesoul ) is a French rally raid driver.

Peterhansel is a 13-time winner of the Paris-Dakar rally , six times by motorcycle and seven times by car. In 1991, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1997 and 1998 he won the motorcycle championship with Yamaha . He was also Enduro World Champion in 1997 and 2001 . In 1988 he won the international six-day race with the French trophy team .

Peterhansel then formed a successful car rally team with Auxerois Jean-Paul Cottret, who was two years his senior . In 2004, 2005 and 2007 he won the automobile championship with Mitsubishi . In 2006 he collided with a tree, thereby losing his overall lead and finishing fourth, while his team-mate Luc Alphand won.

At the 2009 Dakar Rally , Peterhansel struggled with the overheating engine of his Racing Lancer . After having had to extinguish an engine fire twice, he left the company a short time later.

In June 2009 he switched to the Hessian X-Raid team. At the 2010 Dakar and 2011 Dakar rallies , he finished fourth in the overall ranking of cars behind the VW Race Touaregs with his BMW X3 as the best non-VW driver . In the 2012 Dakar Rally and the Dakar 2013 Rally celebrated Peterhansel in a MINI All4 Racing each overall victory. In 2014 he finished second. Peterhansel was 50 minutes behind his caravan mate Nani Roma and was able to catch up to five minutes. After that, however, there was a stall order to reduce the risk of failure and Roma, who had helped Peterhansel out several times in this and the previous rally, won. At the end of May 2014, the X-Raid team and Peterhansel separated, although the contract would have included the start at the 2015 Dakar. In 2015 Peterhansel started for the "Team Peugeot Total", the Peugeot works team. He finished 11th overall. At the 2016 Dakar Rally everything fit together again for the Frenchman, again with Peugeot at the start, he won the car classification and achieved his 12th Dakar success (motorcycle and car). The following year he won again in a Peugeot, but benefited from a time credit from the jury after an accident on the tenth stage.

Stéphane Peterhansel is married to Andrea Peterhansel and currently lives in Montana, Switzerland .
