Ari Pieti Uolevi Vatanen  [ ˈɑri ˈvɑtɑnɛn ] (born April 27, 1952 in Tuupovaara , Joensuu Community , North Karelia ) is a former Finnish rally driver and politician. He was a member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2009 . Please click to listen!Play

Career

Vatanen started his international career in 1976. In 1980 he won the Acropolis rally , his first world championship run. He won the 1981 World Rally Championship with co-driver David Richards in a Ford Escort . He later turned to desert rallies , drove for Peugeot and Citroën and won the Dakar Rally automobile championship four times .

In 1988, with a new course record , he secured overall victory at the Pikes Peak hill climb in the USA.

Others

In 1999 Vatanen was elected to the European Parliament for the first time as a member of the conservative Finnish party Kansallinen Kokoomus . From 2004 to 2009 he was a member of the European Parliament for the French Union pour un Mouvement Populaire . He sat in the conservative EPP-ED Group during both legislative terms . From 1999 to 2004 he was a member of the Committee on Regional Policy, Transport and Tourism and from 2004 to 2009 of the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Ari Vatanen announced on July 10, 2009 that he would run for president of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) in October . FIA member associations have approached him and asked for his candidacy. He lost the election against the Frenchman Jean Todt .
