The FIA - World Rally Championship in 1984 was in January 22, Monte Carlo started and ended on 29 November in the UK . A total of 12 world championship races were held on three continents. Stig Blomqvist from Sweden won the world title for the first and only time. Audi won the design engineer title for the second time after 1982.
The world championship was essentially a three-way battle between Audi, Lancia and Peugeot and their drivers. Lancia continued to rely on the Lancia 037 Evo with mid-engine and rear-wheel drive. This car was essentially only competitive on tarmac.
With the new Peugeot 205 T16, Peugeot combined the concepts of Audi and Lancia: all-wheel drive and mid-engine. During the season, Peugeot, under the direction of Jean Todt , showed the potential of the new concept with victories. In particular, Ari Vatanen was the outstanding Peugeot driver in the 1984 season.
Audi used the Audi Quattro A2 from the previous year throughout the season, while at the same time trying to replace the A2 with the Sport Quattro. The Sport Quattro had a shorter wheelbase compared to its predecessor and the front engine moved even more forward. While Hannu Mikkola and Stig Blomqvist frequently drove the Audi Quattro A2, Röhrl and Mouton almost always drove the Audi Sport Quattro. The Audi Sport Quattro was prone to damage in the 1984 season and was initially difficult to drive, so that neither Michele Mouton nor Walter Röhrl were able to compete for the title.
