2013 season>

The 2012 World Rally Championship season was the 40th FIA - World Rally Championship . It was held over 13 rallies from January 18th to November 4th. For the first time since the existence of the World Rally Championship, the FIA has approved a title sponsor for this rally series. After the FIA signed a contract with the telecommunications company Nokia , the World Rally Championship will officially be called WRC powerd by Nokia from 2012 .

New regulations

Start order

From 2012 there will be new regulations on the starting order for gravel rallies. The World Cup leader is no longer necessarily the first to go on the often polluted routes. For drivers with priorities one and two, the last round of the shake down will be upgraded to qualify . The fastest driver can choose his starting position, followed by the next fastest drivers in descending order. The rest of the stage (s) is started in reverse order. In the case of gravel rallies, the 2-hour shake down will in future be called the free practice stage , during which the route can be traveled twice. From 2012, the qualification that has been completed once will be called the Qualifying Stage . In the asphalt rallies, the old shakedown system will remain and the world championship winner will start before the second - and so on.

Class-A1 and -A2

The new generation Super 2000 vehicles (class A1) equipped with 1600 cm³ turbo engines were not registered with the previous SWRC . From 2012 they can take part in the SWRC, provided they are equipped with a 30 mm air flow limiter . These can also start in the WRC class together with World Rally Cars , but then with a 33 mm air restrictor and the homologated WRC conversion kit. The FIA reserves the right to change the size of the airflow limiter without notice.

SupeRally regulations

From 2012, the rally organizer will be free to choose whether to allow failed participants to start again the next day, in accordance with the SupeRally regulations .

Tire equipment

The official tire supplier for classes A-0 to A-2 has been Michelin since 2011 . From 2012 there will be a reduction from 48 to 35 tires used per rally and vehicle. The run-flat systems , which made it possible to continue driving at racing speed almost without restriction in the event of tire damage, remained banned. In snow rallies, some of which were held on asphalt (Monte Carlo), the participant was able to choose from three different types of tires. The studded tires are mounted on 18-inch rims from 2012.

Routing

From 2012, changing the road surface between two stages is prohibited. Asphalt tests are not allowed to have gravel passages, however asphalt tests are allowed in gravel rallies.

Changes in the teams

Works teams

Mini

The Mini- WRC team supported by Prodrive will start in 2012 as a registered factory team, also for points in the manufacturers' championship. Dani Sordo and Kris Meeke have already been selected as drivers of the Mini WRC . Since David Richards had problems with the financing of the project - he had Mini contractually confirm that Prodrive was solely responsible for the sponsorship issue - the team was restructured. Kris Meeke, who is under contract as a works driver, was not used in all World Championship races. The factory car with the traditional starting number 52 was partly left to a paydriver . At the Rallye Monte Carlo, the Frenchman Pierre Campana, supported by the FFSA , started in the second works car. In the Sweden Rally, Patrik Sandell (usually Sweden WRT) started as 2nd driver instead of Pierre Campana.

ford

The Ford factory team had announced that it would make a decision in October 2011 on whether or not to remain in the World Rally Championship. In mid-December it was announced that Ford would extend its future involvement in the World Rally Championship for a further two years. As Jari-Matti Latvala's new team-mate in the Ford World Rally Team , Petter Solberg was signed for a year.

Citroën

The Citroën Total World Rally Team started again this season with series world champion Sébastien Loeb at the wheel of the Citroën DS3 WRC . In November 2011 it was announced that Ogier's contract had been terminated. For the 2012 season, Citroën signed long-time Ford works driver Mikko Hirvonen as the new number 2 driver alongside Loeb. Citroën team boss Olivier Quesnel announced that three DS3 WRCs will be at the start from Rally Sweden . Nasser Al-Attiyah first took part in the Dakar Rally and then contested twelve rounds of the World Rally Championship.

Volkswagen

Partly as part of the SWRC, Volkswagen Motorsport prepared intensively during the 2012 World Rally Championship for full World Championship entry from 2013. It was planned to take part in all World Championship races , as in 2011 with the Škoda Fabia S2000 , which shares the same floor pan, gearbox, differentials and drivetrain with the Polo . The experiences that VW gained should flow directly into the further development of the VW Polo R WRC , which was officially presented at the 2011 IAA . Two-time rally world champion Carlos Sainz and VW test driver Dieter Depping completed the first test drives in the vineyards around Trier in preparation for entering the WRC at the beginning of November 2011 . Sébastien Ogier was the first works driver to be signed for the next three years.

proton

With Proton , the fifth works team had registered for the World Rally Championship. The team using the Proton Satria Neo S2000 started in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge 2011 , finished the IRC works there and will take part in seven races of the S2000 World Championship as part of the World Rally Championship with Alister McRae and Per-Gunnar Andersson , in addition, the Scot McRae should defend his title in the Asia-Pacific Championship (APRC). The European rally champion Giandomenico Basso should be used in SWRC asphalt runs and drive the development of the Satria. For Andersson and Basso, the season began in January at the Monte Carlo Rally.

vehicles

Private teams

Czech Ford National Team

As the first privateer, Martin Prokop has announced that he wants to compete in the 2012 World Rally Championship in a Ford Fiesta World Rally Car . Ten participations were planned within Europe.

PH Sports

The former supporters of Loeb, Dominique Heintz and Bernard Piallat, from the PH Sport team started the Rallye Monte Carlo with two DS3 WRCs in the World Rally Championship. In 2012, the young Belgian talent Thierry Neuville was given the chance to prove himself in the World Rally Championship. His vehicle started under the team name Citroën Junior Team . Nine to ten starts were planned, in New Zealand no participation was planned. Thanks to his good results, Neuville was also given the opportunity to compete in the World Rally Championship races in Italy and Spain. It was also planned to use the Dutch Peter van Merksteijn senior and Peter van Merksteijn junior irregularly and alternately as the second driver of the team . Their DS3 then appeared on the entry list as Van Merksteijn Motorsport .

M-Sport

M-Sport continued the customer team program in the WRC this year, albeit without the support of Stobart. François Delecour , Yevgeny Novikov and Ott Tänak started for this team at the Monte Carlo Rally . From the Rally Sweden, the European champion Michał Sołowow took over the cockpit from Delecour .

Ice 1 Racing

Kimi Raikkonen ended his involvement in the World Rally Championship at the end of the 2011 season in order to return to Formula 1 with Lotus in 2012 .

Adapta

Mads Østberg was to take part in 11 rally world championship races with a Ford Fiesta RS WRC. The Norwegian completed his first race of the season at the Rally Sweden. In New Zealand it did not start due to the enormous transport costs. The 24-year-old Norwegian Eyvind Brynildsen was brought into the team as the second driver in the service of the Østberg clan.

Sweden World Rally Team

The Sweden WRT, founded in 2012 by former Swedish rally greats such as Stig Blomqvist and Thomas Rådström , Jan Pettersson , Leif Asterhag and Staffan Parmander , chose Patrik Sandell as its youngster for the next three years. Together with his co-driver Staffan Paramander, he competed in the Mini WRC in 2012.

Go Fast Energy WRT

The Go Fast Energy WRT Team took part in all 13 rallies. Until after the shake down to the Monte Carlo Rally, this was unclear due to financial difficulties; in the end, Matthew Wilson and Henning Solberg drove the team's Ford Fiesta WRC.

Eljas Motorsport

The Swedish touring car star Richard Göransson drove a Mini JCW WRC for the team from the Sweden Rally.

Palmeirinha Rally

The Brazilian Paulo Nobre took part in a customer mini from the Monte Carlo Rally.

Armindo Araujo WRT

Armindo Araujo founded his own team and, like Paulo Nobre, started in a Prodrive customer car.

Monster Ford WRT

Ken Block only started three rallies this year. He started the season in Mexico, and then drove to New Zealand and Finland. At the Rally Mexico, Christopher Atkinson made his comeback; he also started in a Ford Fiesta for the Monster Team.

Others

Julien Maurin took part in the Monte Carlo Rally with a Ford Fiesta WRC. Jari Ketomaa took over this vehicle from the Rally Sweden .

Changes in the racing calendar

The Monte Carlo Rally , which was part of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) from 2009 to 2011 , took place again in 2012 as part of the World Rally Championship. It started on Tuesday, January 17th with the shake down and ended after 6 days, 17 special stages over 433 km and a total distance of 1246 km on Sunday, January 22nd. This event replaced the Jordan rally that was held in April last year .

As part of the Rally Sweden , which took place from February 9th to 12th, six cross-border special stages of the Rally Norway were driven for the first time . In four days, 24 special stages over 360 km were completed. The total length was 1874 km.

According to the FIA World Rally Championship rotation principle, the 2012 Rally Australia was replaced by the Rally New Zealand . The Rally Great Britain took place in late summer 2012. The Rally Sardinia was replaced by the Targa Florio Rally in Sicily and, together with the Rally Catalonia, moved towards the end of the world championship calendar.

Competitions

The kilometers entered correspond to the distance of the special stages. The distance between the connecting routes between the individual WPs is not included.
