Per-Gunnar "PG" Andersson (born March 10, 1980 in Årjäng ) is a Swedish rally driver .
Career
Beginnings in rallying
Per-Gunnar Andersson began his motorsport career at the age of 15. In a Saab 99 he drove Folkrace , an entry-level variant of rallycross that is widespread in Sweden . In 1999 he contested his first rallies with a VW Golf I. In the fall of 1999, he bought a Seat Ibiza GTi 16V of the group N , with which he departed in the next two years to rallies. After the autumn of 2001 was unsuccessful, he bought a Renault Clio RS from Group N, with which good results were achieved immediately in 2002. In each group N he won the Norwegian rally championship and he was runner-up in the Swedish rally championship. He also made his debut in the Rally Sweden in the World Rally Championship . In 2003 he switched to a Renault Clio of the Super 1600 class and won the Swedish rally championship in this category. He also took part in four rallies in the WRC in the second half of the year. At the Rally Finland he was the best-placed driver with a Super 1600 car until he retired. The best result he achieved was 19th overall at the San Remo Rally .
JWRC with Suzuki
In 2004 Andersson received a cockpit in the Suzuki Sport Europe team . With a Suzuki Ignis S1600 , he contested a full season in the Junior World Rally Championship for the first time . He achieved JWRC victories at the Rally Turkey , the Rally Finland and the Rally Sardinia , where with ninth place in the overall standings he was within reach of the WRC points. At the end of the season, he took first place in the JWRC points classification with a two-point lead and was able to celebrate his first title as junior rally world champion. At the same time, he continued to drive in the Swedish rally championship, where he defended his title in the Super 1600 class with a clear point advantage.
Suzuki used Andersson in the 2005 season in addition to the rallies with JWRC rating in almost all other races of the world championship. After the season had started only partially successful for him, he scored his first JWRC victory of the year at the Rally Greece . Subsequently, Suzuki provided him with a Suzuki Swift S1600 . The new vehicle initially failed to produce any good results, and he finished the season in sixth place in the Junior World Rally Championship.
At the season opener of the 2006 Junior World Rally Championship, the Rally Sweden, Andersson achieved his first JWRC victory with the Suzuki Swift S1600. He also finished the following rallies in the top points of the JWRC. At the Rally Turkey Andersson was again the fastest JWRC driver and could have secured the title early with the victory. However, he was subsequently excluded from the evaluation because he had allegedly used unauthorized help with service work. An objection was unsuccessful. Since he then had to post a failure at the season finale, he had to admit defeat in the fight for the title. In between, Andersson also made guest starts for Bryntesson Motorsport in some races of the Camaro Cup . He achieved top positions and secured a permanent place in the team for the following season.
In 2007 Andersson continued to compete for Suzuki Sport Europe in the JWRC. At the beginning of the season he won the JWRC classification of the Rally Sweden. This was followed by further class victories at the Rally Portugal and the Rally Catalonia . Although he had to skip two rallies due to the loss of his driver's license, he collected the most points and became junior rally world champion again after 2004. This made him the first driver to win the JWRC twice. In the Camaro Cup he won five races and finished second overall at the end of the season.
With the Suzuki SX4 in the WRC
Andersson became a works driver in the Suzuki World Rally Team in 2008 and received a cockpit in the new Suzuki SX4 WRC . At the season opener, the Monte Carlo Rally , he drove a World Rally Car to eighth place in the overall standings on his very first rally . With this he scored his first WRC point and also the first WRC points for Suzuki. In the period that followed, several technical defects prevented good placements. His vehicle was continuously developed and it gained in speed and reliability. From the last third of the season, Andersson was able to get into the points again. He finished sixth in the New Zealand Rally . He then achieved his best WRC result to date at the Rally Japan , finishing fifth. At the final Rally Wales he managed to repeat fifth place. At the end of the season he finished twelfth in the championship with twelve points. However, after the 2008 season, Suzuki ended his involvement in the WRC again after only one season, which is why Andersson had to look for a new employer.
Again without a fixed cockpit
Andersson took part in the 2009 Rally Norway in a privately entered Škoda Fabia WRC . He surprisingly drove two special stage best times with the aged vehicle and was now in fifth place. However, he later had to give up because of a damaged clutch. In 2009 he did not make any further appearances in the WRC. The rest of the season he took part in the Swedish Rally Championship with a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX from Group N. There he achieved four overall victories and also prevailed against World Rally Cars. For the title in Group N, he had not collected enough points because he had not participated in the season opener.
At the beginning of the 2010 season, Andersson contested a WRC rally for the first time in a year in a Škoda Fabia S2000 from JM Engineering at the Rally Sweden. He achieved a WRC point with tenth place overall and also won the SWRC classification , which was held for the first time at this rally. He then received an offer from Rufa Sport to take part in a few other WRC rallies with their Škoda Fabia S2000. He achieved several top placings in the SWRC and he scored a WRC point again at the Rally Finland. In the Rally Sardinia , he also made his debut in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X Intercontinental Rally Challenge . Andersson's highlight of the season was a guest start in the Ford Focus RS WRC 08 by the Stobart team at the 2010 Rally Bulgaria . There he finished seventh and scored six WRC points. He finished the season with a total of eight points in 13th place in the WRC drivers' standings. In the overall ranking of the SWRC, he only finished ninth at the end of the season, despite several good results. As a result, the points were deleted from his four last rallies because he had not competed in the Rally Japan.
Factory driver at Proton
Before the 2011 season, Andersson negotiated with Ford and Mini about a cockpit in a World Rally Car, but the negotiations were unsuccessful. Finally, he was able to work in the Proton Satria Neo S2000 of the Proton works team at the 2011 Monte Carlo Rally . Despite an accident at this rally, Proton gave him a contract for the entire season in the IRC. Donations from his fans also enabled him to take part in the 2011 Rally Sweden in a Ford Fiesta RS WRC from Stobart . After four special stage best times and a brief lead, but also a few incidents, he finished in seventh place. He had once again raised enough money to start at the Sardinia Rally. He made his third appearance in the 2011 WRC in the Subaru Impreza R4 from Tommi Mäkinen Racing at the Rally Finland.
