Barum Czech Rally Zlín 2011

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Barum Czech Rally Zlín 2011 was held from August 26th to 28th, 2011 near Zlín in the Czech Republic. It was the seventh round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge 2011 and was also part of the European Rally Championship and the Czech Rally Championship .

background

The paddock was in Zlín. The program consisted of 15 special stages over 248.48 rated kilometers on paved roads. The total distance including connecting stages was 619.73 kilometers. The shake down took place on Friday, August 26th . That evening the competition opened with a short night test in downtown Zlín. The remaining 14 exams took place in daylight on the following two days.

The rally had a strong field of participants. Of the 112 teams registered, 29 drove Super 2000 cars. Among them were Matthias Kahle and Mark Wallenwein , the two drivers from Škoda Auto Deutschland in a Škoda Fabia S2000 . While Wallenwein already took part in the Monte Carlo Rally in the IRC, Kahle made his debut in this series at the Barum Rally.

course

Andreas Mikkelsen completed the shakedown as the fastest. Škoda works driver Juho Hänninen won the first special stage and took the lead in the overall standings. The next day he was replaced by Mikkelsen on SS2, but his leadership was also short-lived. Local hero Jan Kopecký set the fastest time on SS3 and took the lead in the overall standings. Meanwhile , Pavel Valoušek suffered a broken arm in an accident. Kopecký increased his lead to just under six seconds over Mikkelsen by the lunch break. Due to a puncture on SS8, however, Mikkelsen lost almost two minutes and Guy Wilks even lost almost three minutes. By the end of the day Kopecký had beaten Hänninen and Freddy Loix for almost 20 seconds . The latter set three best times in the afternoon after changes to the setup .

On the last day, the leading Jan Kopecký had to struggle with a defective power steering in his Škoda. He lost over 15 seconds on SS10 and so his lead over Freddy Loix had already melted to under six seconds. At the same time, Bryan Bouffier , who had previously been in fourth place, was out of action when he went off the track after braking and tore off two wheels when he hit a stone. Loix then set two best times, but was unable to make up crucial time gaps on Kopecký. After SS12, Loix was only one second behind Kopecký, but Kopecký was able to consolidate his lead and finally won with 1.2 seconds ahead of Loix. This was the tightest decision in IRC history to date. Kopecký's team-mate Juho Hänninen took third place. Andreas Mikkelsen was at the limit after losing time the day before and still achieved four best times. In the battle for fourth place, however, he had to admit defeat to Thierry Neuville by six seconds . With his first IRC success in 2011, Kopecký moved up to within three points of the leading Hänninen. The two Škoda Germany drivers, however, still lacked competitiveness. Wallenwein finished the rally in 18th and Kahle in 19th out of a total of 77 placed participants.
