Andreas Mikkelsen (born June 22, 1989 in Oslo ) is a Norwegian rally driver .

Career

Entry into rallying

In his youth, Andreas Mikkelsen practiced alpine skiing and from 2003 to 2004 also motocross . In both sports he was part of the Norwegian national youth team. A knee injury forced him to no longer practice skiing and motocross at the highest level. Then, at the age of 16, he turned all his attention to rallying. Andreas Mikkelsen trained in rally driving with a Ford Focus, with Ola Fløene at his side as co-driver.

Mikkelsen moved to Great Britain in 2006 because he was allowed to get his driver's license there when he was 17. After obtaining his driver's license, he took part in a number of smaller, national rallies, scoring five wins in Great Britain and one win in Estonia (Saaremaa Rally). This made him the youngest rally driver to ever win a rally in Great Britain. At the Rally Great Britain he made his debut in the World Rally Championship in a Ford Focus RS WRC 05 from Team Ramsport .

WRC from 2007 to 2017

In 2007 Mikkelsen took part in eight rally world championship races. Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg issued a special permit to start the Rally Norway , as Mikkelsen did not yet have a license to drive on public roads in Norway. He finished the rally in tenth place, with which he achieved his first respectable win in the WRC. At the Rally Ireland he achieved his best result of the season with 9th place and only narrowly missed the points. At the end of the season he received a current vehicle with the Ford Focus RS WRC 06.

From 2008, Mikkelsen received support from the former world rally champion Marcus Grönholm , who became Mikkelsen's mentor after his career ended. At the start of the season he picked up his first world championship points at the Rally Sweden with fifth place. He set the record for being the youngest driver to have achieved WRC points. A week later, he won his first rally in the Norwegian rally championship, making him the youngest driver ever to achieve this success. Later in the season he won three more rallies in the Norwegian championship. Nevertheless, he just lost the duel for the title against Mads Østberg and had to be satisfied with the runner-up. In the World Rally Championship, Mikkelsen drove a Ford Focus RS WRC 07 from Rally Germany onwards . In this rally, he set his first fastest time on a special stage . He then finished the Rally Catalonia in eighth place, which was the second time he achieved points. At the end of the season he finished 16th in the WRC with five points.

In 2012, Mikkelsen achieved 14th place in the World Championship with a Ford Focus with 13 points. For 2013, Mikkelsen got a contract with Volkswagen Motorsport in the junior team and drove ten rallies. With 50 world championship points he was 10th in the World Cup final. In 2014 Mikkelsen will also drive with co-driver Mikko Markkula at Volkswagen. He finished seventh at the Monte Carlo Rally . At the following World Championship round in Sweden , he finished second and thus on the podium. At the end of the season he was third.

The following year, Mikkelsen clinched his maiden victory at the Rally Spain . Again he was third

In 2016, now with the new co-driver Anders Jæger , the Norwegian achieved two more victories in Poland and Australia . Mikkelsen came third again.

Due to the suspension of Volkswagen's WRC project, the Norwegian did not receive a factory cockpit for 2017. That is why he drove the first rallies in a Skoda Fabia in the WRC2 class. From the Rally Italy he was given the Citroen cockpit from Stéphane Lefebvre , who had been dismissed due to poor performance.

Alternately in IRC and WRC

After the 2008 season, Mikkelsen separated from the Ramsport team due to some differences. The economic crisis caused additional difficulties, the budget for starts in the world championship was missing, so that he largely withdrew from the WRC. His father, the industrialist Steinar Mikkelsen, cut his financial support from 2009, so his son had to find sponsorship money for his rally activities himself. Erik Veiby, the chairman of Rally Norway , became its manager. With a Subaru Impreza WRX STI from Group N, Mikkelsen made a guest start at the 2009 Rally Norway. Otherwise he drove in the Norwegian rally championship, in which he won the Group N classification. He drove his only appearance with a World Rally Car in the WRC at the Rally Poland , where he started with a Škoda Fabia WRC , but retired with engine failure. He made his debut in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge with an Opel Corsa OPC S2000 at the Barum Czech Rally Zlín . In September 2009 Mikkelsen had a serious accident at the Larvik Rally in Norway, in which his vehicle hit a 10-year-old spectator who died at the scene of the accident.

Andreas Mikkelsen in the Ford Fiesta S2000 at Rally Scotland 2010

Mikkelsen started the 2010 season in the Subaru Impreza WRX STI in the Norwegian Rally Championship. Ford selected him for the WRC season opener, Rally Sweden, to drive the new Ford Fiesta S2000 on its WRC debut. He finished the rally in eleventh place in the overall standings and as the second-best driver with a Super 2000 car. Then he went back to the Intercontinental Rally Challenge and completed seven rallies there with a Ford Fiesta S2000. His best IRC result came in second at the Rally Scotland. He finished the season with 21 points in seventh place in the overall standings. At the end of the season, he returned to individual WRC races in the Škoda Fabia S2000 from the Škoda Rally Team Italia . At the Rally Great Britain he achieved a WRC point with tenth place overall and achieved class victory in the SWRC .

At the end of 2010, Mikkelsen signed a contract with Škoda UK for the 2011 season . He no longer had to pay for his rallies himself. He was also accepted into the FIA 's driver academy in 2011 . He drove the entire 2011 season with the Škoda Fabia S2000. At the Sata Rallye Açores 2011 , he fought for a long time for victory with Juho Hänninen and finally finished the rally in second place. At the Mecsek Rally he retired while in the lead on the penultimate special stage and at the following Rally San Remo he was only beaten by Thierry Neuville by 1.5 seconds . After all, he won his first IRC win at the Rally of Scotland by a clear margin. This also made him the youngest winner of an IRC rally to date. Before the last rally, Mikkelsen was in fourth place in the drivers' standings and still had a chance for the title. With a win in Cyprus he won the 2011 IRC overall ranking .
