The 24th Rally Australia took place from September 11th to 13th, 2015. A total of 17 special stages were driven on gravel.

Reports

Volkswagen Motorsport boss Jost Capito, third world championship title in a row

Day 1 (Friday, September 11th)

The Volkswagen drivers Sébastien Ogier , Jari-Matti Latvala and Andreas Mikkelsen opened the first special stage as leaders in the points table of the World Rally Championship . They had to drive the gravel roads free of loose gravel for their subsequent competitors. Dani Sordo (Hyundai) won the first three special stages and took the lead in the overall standings. Kris Meeke (Citroën) won the fourth special stage and replaced Sordo in the lead. In SS five, six and seven, Latvala was two seconds ahead of Meeke for the day. Ogier followed in third place, three seconds behind Latvala. On the first day, the Rally Australia developed into an open exchange of blows between the three brands Hyundai , Citroën and Volkswagen , which meanwhile led the competition. After the first third of the rally, the three brands were in the top five within just 15.9 seconds.

Day 2 (Saturday, September 12th)

After the last special stage, Sébastien Ogier was just ahead of Kris Meeke with a minimal lead of just 0.3 seconds in the overall standings. Meeke took back the lead from Jari-Matti Latvala in the first special stage of the day. The 12th special stage was also a night stage, which turned out to be extremely dangerous. The dust raised by the vehicles remained in the air and significantly impaired the driver's view.

In the morning the young Hayden Paddon (Hyundai) showed his talent when he won SS 9 and 10. In the 11th special stage he lost some time again, he finished the day fifth overall. Fourth place was defended by Andreas Mikkelsen behind team mate Latvala, who was third at the end of the day.

With a win, Ogier could make his third world champion title clear on Sunday. The pressure was therefore on Latvala, who would have to score at least ten points more than Ogier to keep his chance. With a gap of less than three seconds between the first three drivers, there was also an exciting starting position for victory in the Rally Australia .

3rd day (Sunday, September 13th)

The tenth round of the World Rally Championship got off to an exciting start, and the events clearly unfolded on the last day. On the five stages on Sunday, Volkswagen and Sébastien Ogier left no doubt and won all the special stages. With the seventh rally victory this year, Ogier also made himself world champion 2015 ahead of schedule after 2013 and 2014 . Volkswagen made the third manufacturers' title clear, three world championship races before the end of the season. Only Jari-Matti Latvala could have prevented Ogier's third world title, but he had to admit defeat 2.6 seconds behind. Third place went to Kris Meeke (Citroën), who made it safely onto the podium after Andreas Mikkelsen (Volkswagen) had received a ten-second penalty. Mikkelsen had previously arrived at the service park too late.

WRC2

Nasser Al-Attiyah's (Ford Fiesta) lead was 50.3 seconds on the first day of the rally, after problems with the gearbox, Al-Attiyah only had 14.3 seconds until Saturday evening. Yuriy Protasov (Ford Fiesta) won the first three special stages on Sunday. He came within 6.9 seconds before a ten-second penalty for jumping early took away his chance to win. Although Protasov also won the last two special stages, Al-Attiyah was 13.5 seconds ahead in the end.

With the win, Al-Attiyah was 17 points ahead of Protasov in the championship, who moved up to second. Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari (Ford Fiesta) crossed the finish line in third place, more than two minutes behind, and overtook Esapekka Lappi, who had skipped the Rally Australia, in the championship. The new third is eight points behind Protasov.
