Reports

Day 1 (Thursday, June 11th)

The privateer Martin Prokop (Ford) started the first special stage with two soft tires, which, in addition to a faultless drive, brought him the win. Dani Sordo finished second in the Hyundai, but he was given a ten-second time penalty for a jump start. As a result, Andreas Mikkelsen (Volkswagen) moved up to second place. Sébastien Ogier joined team mate Jari-Matti Latvala in sixth and Kris Meeke (Citroën) came eighth. The best 18 drivers ranked themselves within 10 seconds of the first 2.5 kilometers. On Friday the drivers have to start the second special stage with the same tires that they used for the first special stage.

2nd day (Friday, June 12th)

Between Volkswagen , Hyundai and Ford , a gripping battle for the top five places in the overall class developed in dusty conditions on the narrow streets. The dry and hot weather conditions that prevailed on Thursday changed to muggy weather on Friday after nightly thunderstorms. Hayden Paddon (Hyundai) won special stages two to four and gained a lead of over 25 seconds over Jari-Matti Latvala and Sébastien Ogier . Paddon's teammates Dani Sordo and Thierry Neuville took fourth and fifth place . In the tenth special stage, Sordo lost the left rear wheel, which cost a lot of time, but he still crossed the finish line. In the tenth special stage, Neuville lost time due to a problem with the turbo. Latvala also lost time after a puncture. Ogier got faster and faster in the course of the day and came within 8.8 seconds of Paddon by evening. Latvala and the first Ford driver Ott Tänak followed .

The most difficult day awaited the drivers and co-drivers on Saturday, with 212.83 special stages the longest in the world championship to date.

3rd day (Saturday, June 13th)

Hayden Paddon had to surrender the lead to Sébastien Ogier after transmission problems, but second place was still possible for the New Zealander.

Paddon's lead over third Mads Østberg (Citroën) is 72 seconds, which he has to defend over a total of 46 kilometers on Sunday. Østberg benefited from the bad luck of his colleagues and on an inconspicuous day moved up to third place before he lost time on the last special stage due to a creeping puncture.

Thierry Neuville is in fourth place after Saturday with a larger lead over Elfyn Evans (Ford) of 5: 15.5 minutes. In sixth place was Jari-Matti Latvala , who was plagued by numerous problems. Already in SS13 he was able to write off a podium after a tire damage, on SS17 he suffered a damper damage and in SS19 there was also a suspension problem. Ott Tänak (Ford) was on the podium for a long time, but due to a gearbox damage in SS17, he couldn't get any further and third place was gone. Martin Prokop , who had two punctures and a problem with the oil pressure at the same time, got hit on SS13 .

Andreas Mikkelsen (Volkswagen) retired with a broken suspension, shortly afterwards Hyundai also took Dani Sordo out of the rally with a technical defect. In the end, Robert Kubica (Ford) also had to give up with transmission problems because he could only use gears five and six. In addition, Kubica had a few punctures.

4th day (Sunday, June 14th)

Hayden Paddon and John Kennard (Hyundai i20 WRC)

World champion Sébastien Ogier managed his lead on the last day of the rally and secured his fourth win of the season in the World Rally Championship . He took more than three minutes from his pursuer Hayden Paddon , who risked nothing on the final day. Paddon achieved the best WRC result with second place and his first podium. So far, fifth in Sweden was his best result this year.

Thierry Neuville took third place and took the second podium this season. He was already over 1:17 minutes behind Paddon.

M-Sport driver Elfyn Evans finished fourth with a safe drive. Evans was only 72 seconds short of third place at the finish. Behind them, Mads Østberg came in fifth. On the first special stage of the day he damaged his car and fell back from third place. In the end he saved at least 16.6 seconds on Jari-Matti Latvala , who was thrown back on Saturday by numerous problems.

"This is a fantastic result, I'm very relieved, I couldn't have wished for a better result."

WRC2

A tire damage on the first special stage on Sunday cost Yuriy Protasov ( Ford Fiesta RRC ) the lead and the multiple Italian champion Paolo Andreucci ( Peugeot 208 VTi) took the lead with a 6.7 second lead. But Andreucci damaged the radiator on his car on the same special stage and Protasov took the lead back on the next special stage. There was only half a second between the two competitors before the last special stage, on which Protasov won the rally.

Jan Kopecký , driving the new Škoda Fabia R5 , took third place with a solid performance. Because of the many failures in the WRC , the WRC2 drivers were able to get world championship points for the ranks seven, eight and nine in the overall class, even in the top rally class.
