Reports

Shakedown (Thursday, August 20)

Jari-Matti Latvala (Volkswagen) won the shakedown for Rallye Deutschland , the ninth round of the 2015 World Rally Championship . Latvala completed the 4.6 kilometer test course at Konz in the third attempt in a time of 2: 21.4 minutes. He was followed by team mate Andreas Mikkelsen 0.2 seconds and Kris Meeke (Citroën) 0.7 seconds behind.

For one driver, the Rally Germany was over before it really started. Privateer Lorenzo Bertelli (Ford) had to cancel his participation. At the beginning of the week he was suspected of being ill with food poisoning and was therefore unable to complete all of the exams during the inspection.

Day 1 (Friday, August 21)

After Sébastien Ogier (Volkswagen) had won the first two special stages, Jari-Matti Latvala took the lead with a fastest time in SS 3. But only with a wafer-thin lead of 0.1 seconds. In the afternoon Ogier got faster and faster on the second run through the special stages. After SS 5 he took the lead and pulled away from Latvala. With seven best times in eight special stages, Ogier was 9.5 seconds ahead of Latvala.

In third place (+34.9 seconds), Andreas Mikkelsen completed Volkswagen's good day's result. Mikkelsen was unable to keep up with his teammates' pace, but there was no danger from behind, as Dani Sordo (Hyundai) was more than 30 seconds behind him.

Kris Meeke (Citroën) drove in fourth place for a long time , but then made a driving error. On the sixth special stage, Meeke went off the track, but was initially able to continue his journey. His left front suspension broke in a depression, probably a result of the previous accident. Meeke was able to repair the damage poorly, but was only able to continue at a slow pace afterwards. More than ten minutes behind the leaders, he fell out of the top ten places.

Day 2 (Saturday, August 22nd)

Sébastien Ogier was faster than his teammate Jari-Matti Latvala in the two longest special stages on the armored plate with over 45 kilometers . On Saturday morning Ogier had a lead of around nine seconds, by the evening he increased it to 33.8 seconds. Ogier was having a good day, too. He won six out of nine special stages on Saturday. With Andreas Mikkelsen , the third Volkswagen driver was still on the podium.

Hyundai drivers Dani Sordo and Thierry Neuville fought for fourth place. Neuville passed his team-mate first, but Sordo hit back despite problems with the transmission. At the end of the day, Sordo was ahead with 9.5 seconds.

Elfyn Evans (Ford) took sixth position. Evans said he was too aggressive with the tires. Mads Østberg (Citroën) followed just 3.2 seconds behind Evans . Østberg benefited from problems at Ott Tänak (Ford) and Hayden Paddon (Hyundai). Tänak got off the track and was only able to restart the engine that had died after about a minute. Paddon was not aware of any mistakes and could not explain the loss of time. His mechanics solved the riddle, the turbo was faulty.

Stéphane Lefebvre got to drive a DS3 WRC from Citroën for the first time . The debutant in the top class of the WRC impressed with a second place in the twelfth special stage.

A broken drive shaft braked Martin Prokop (Ford). Kevin Abbring (Hyundai) lost time due to a defective power steering and Robert Kubica (Ford) retired with a damaged suspension after several previous accidents.

3rd day (Sunday 23 August)

Two times, in 2013 and 2014 , Volkswagen failed in its home rally. The third attempt was now a triple success. Sébastien Ogier won ahead of his teammates Jari-Matti Latvala and Andreas Mikkelsen . Ogier made another big step towards world title number three. For Volkswagen it was the third triple victory of the season.

The Hyundai drivers Thierry Neuville and Dani Sordo , who finished first and second in the Rallye Deutschland last year, were unable to counter the Volkswagen this year. The two fought an exciting duel for fourth place, which team boss Michel Nandan put an end to with a team order with a view to the constructors' championship. Sordo finished fourth and Neuville fifth. Thanks to these rankings, Hyundai overtook the Citroën team in the constructors' world championship.

“It's a big win, I'm very relieved. The pressure was great this weekend because everyone expected us to win. "

WRC2

By winning the Rallye Deutschland, Jan Kopecký had completed the winning hat trick for the Škoda Fabia R5 in the WRC2 class. At the same time there was a premiere: Kopecký celebrated the first World Championship victory for the new Škoda rally car on asphalt together with co-driver Pavel Dresler. Eric Camilli came second in the Ford Fiesta R5 . The second Škoda works driver Esapekka Lappi shone with seven special stage best times. A slip in the second special stage of the rally had robbed him of all chances of a result in the top ranks. In the end, it was enough for 13th place.

In the overall WRC2 table, defending champion Nasser Al-Attiyah is the new leader with 72 points. At his premiere in the Škoda Fabia R5 as a privateer, Al-Attiyah worked his way up to fourth place in the ranking. Lappi follows in second place with 70 and Ketomaa with 67 points.
