Reports
Day 1 (Thursday, July 30th)
The shakedown ended badly for Thierry Neuville on Thursday . During the first run of the test before the start of the eighth race of the season, Neuville came off the road with the Hyundai i20 WRC and hit a tree backwards, severely damaging the rear of the car. The car had to be brought back to the service park on a tow truck, where the mechanics repaired it until the first special stage.
In the evening in Harju, a district of the Finnish capital Helsinki , the first special stage with 2.27 kilometers was on the program. The reigning world champion and current championship leader Sébastien Ogier (Volkswagen) secured first place with a time of 1: 48.6 minutes and stayed as the leader in the overall standings. Kris Meeke (Citroën) and Andreas Mikkelsen (Volkswagen) followed in the same second in second and third place.
Day 2 (Friday, July 31)
The duel between the two Volkswagen drivers Jari-Matti Latvala and Sébastien Ogier kept the audience in suspense all day. After a best time for Latvala in the first special stage of the day, Ogier had taken the lead in the morning with three special stage victories in a row. In the most difficult and fastest special stage "Ouninpohja" in the entire WRC calendar, Ogier broke Harri Rovanperä's course record from 2002 with a time of 15: 53.9 minutes . This record only lasted a few hours, because in the afternoon Latvala was once again significantly faster on the second passage of the "Ouninpohja" with a time of 15: 36.8 minutes. With two further best times, Latvala converted a deficit on Ogier of 5.3 seconds before the lunch break into a lead of 2.6 seconds in the afternoon and led the rally in the evening. The Citroën duo Kris Meeke and Mads Østberg followed in third and fourth ahead of the Hyundai's of Thierry Neuville and Dani Sordo .
Andreas Mikkelsen (Volkswagen) and Hayden Paddon (Hyundai) caused shock moments with serious accidents. Mikkelsen rolled over several times on the fifth special stage, with his Volkswagen Polo R WRC being so badly damaged that it was not possible to repair it on site. Paddon had an accident around one kilometer before the finish of the sixth special stage. This car was also badly damaged, but Paddon and co-driver John Kennard were uninjured, as were Mikkelsen and Ola Fløene. Paddon's Hyundai i20 WRC could not be repaired on site, so that a restart under the rally 2 regulations was no longer possible on Saturday .
3rd day (Saturday, August 1st)
After five special stage best times, Jari-Matti Latvala started the final day of the rally with a lead of 13.2 seconds over Sébastien Ogier . All other drivers had nothing to do with the fight for overall victory. Mads Østberg (Citroën) was already 1: 28.0 minutes behind Latvala in third.
For Kris Meeke (Citroën) the rally ended in disappointment. Meeke was on a safe third place before he made a driving error on the 16th special. In a right turn he turned off the road and hit a tree with the left front wheel, causing the suspension to break.
Robert Kubica (Ford) did not cross the finish line on his own. After the technical problems on Friday, Kubica started again under the rally 2 regulations . After successful special stages on Saturday, Kubica passed a mishap two corners before the finish line of the last special stage. He got off the road and rolled his Ford Fiesta RS WRC onto the roof.
Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) was fourth behind Østberg, who had inherited third place overall after his team-mate Meeke retired . Neuville was slowed down by engine problems on the i20 WRC in the afternoon. Ott Tänak (M-Sport-Ford) had worked his way up to fifth place again after his problems on Friday, followed by two M-Sport- Ford privateers with Juho Hänninen and Martin Prokop .
4th day (Sunday, August 2nd)
Jari-Matti Latvala drove away from his team-mate Sébastien Ogier in Finland . After 2010 and 2014 , Latvala won his home rally for the third time. For around two days, the two Volkswagen drivers had a duel at eye level, in which they were often only separated by a few seconds. The preliminary decision in the battle for overall victory was made on Saturday afternoon, when Latvala extended the lead to 13.2 seconds with victories in three special stages in a row.
Ogier no longer fought for victory on the final day, but concentrated on taking the three additional points on the power stage . He succeeded, with which Ogier expanded his impressive record in the power stages . In eight world championship races this year, the reigning world champion won the three additional points for the winner of the power stage seven times . The other points went to Latvala (2) and Kris Meeke (Citroën, 1) in Finland. With a total of 21 points for second place and victory at the power stage , Ogier has 182 points in the overall standings and leads the world championship standings. Latvala is new in second place, but he is 89 points behind Ogier. Mads Østberg is third with 84 points. Ogier therefore has the chance to win the third World Championship title in a row at the upcoming Rally Germany .
"That was one of the best rides in my life."
WRC2
Esapekka Lappi , who was already victorious in the Rally Poland , dominated the Rally Finland with the Škoda Fabia R5 . On Friday morning he took the top position. He continuously gained a comfortable lead over his team-mate Pontus Tidemand . The duo dossed the speed on Saturday and Sunday, ultimately Lappi Tidemand relegated to second place after 20 gravel special stages over 320 km by 1:41 minutes. With this victory, Lappi took the lead in the WRC 2 World Championship by three points over Jari Ketomaa , who had to skip the rally due to an eye injury.
With third place, Stéphane Lefebvre (Citroën) secured his best result since his win at the season opener in Monte Carlo . Lefebvre, who was in the lead after the first special stage, finished the rally 1: 50.5 minutes behind Tidemand. Yuriy Protasov ( Ford Fiesta RRC ) finished fourth, followed by Australian champion Scott Pedder , who achieved his best career result with fifth. Anders Grøndal (Citroën) completed the top six.
