Jyväskylä [ ˈjyvæskylæ ] is a university and school town and municipality in central Finland . With 141,305 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) it is the seventh largest city in the country. Jyväskylä is around 270 km north of Helsinki on the north shore of Lake Päijänne .
history
Jyväskylä was founded in 1837. It has been a university town since 1966 . Until 1997, Jyväskylä was the capital of the Province of Central Finland, which became part of the Province of Western Finland with the 1997 administrative reform . However Jyväskylä is also the capital of the reorganized landscape Central Finland.
At the beginning of 2009, the city of Jyväskylä merged with the rural municipality of Jyväskylä , at the same time the municipality of Korpilahti was incorporated.

In 2004 there were 2,048 foreigners living in Jyväskylä; the unemployment rate in 2007 was 12.7%. About a quarter of the population are students.
As a result of the merger of the city with the rural municipality of Jyväskylä in 2009 and the incorporation of the municipality of Korpilahti , the area of Jyväskyläs increased by more than ten times, and the population rose to around 128,000.
Attractions
The image of the city is shaped by the buildings of Alvar Aalto , who u. a. designed the police headquarters, the university and the city museum. The Alvar Aalto Museum is dedicated to his work.

- Harbor with old steamships and a view of Mattilanniemi and Kuokkala
- Harju, a wooded ridge in the city center with a lookout tower and restaurant
- Laajavuori, winter sports center
- Viherlandia, garden center
Just outside is the Savutuvan Apaja open-air museum . The Neste Oil Rally Finland (formerly 1000 Lakes Rally), part of the World Rally Championship (WRC) and practically the “event of the year”, takes place annually on the gravel roads around Jyväskylä .
The Aviation Museum of Central Finland ( Keski-Suomen Ilmailumuseo ) is located 18 kilometers north at Jyväskylä Airport in Tikkakoski .

City structure
The center of Jyväskylä is located between Lake Jyväsjärvi and the Harju ridge and consists of mostly parallel streets with multi-storey residential and commercial buildings, which are quite steep towards the shore. The original wooden houses have usually been replaced by concrete and stone buildings since the 1950s.
Important city districts:
- Kuokkala - across from the city center on the southern bank of Jyväsjärvi . In the 1990s, the area began to be developed as a residential area with modern multi-storey houses.
- Mäki-Matti - mostly single-family area north of the city center and Harju .
- Kortepohja - mainly student housing, northwest, approx. 2 km from the center
- Kypärämäki - mainly single-family and small townhouses, western edge of town
- Tourula - apartments and businesses in the east of the city on the Tourujoki River
- Lohikoski - mainly single-family and small townhouses, peninsula in the north of the city
- Nenäinniemi - New building area, mainly single-family and small terraced houses, peninsula in the south of the city on Lake Päijänne
- Keltinmäki - prefabricated housing estate on the outskirts, southwest
- Myllyjärvi - mostly single-family houses and student residences on the outskirts, southwest
- Huhtasuo - prefabricated housing estate on the outskirts, east
- Keljonkangas - mainly industrial park, in the southwest
- Seppälä - mainly industrial area, in the east
- Säynätsalo - part of the city located on the island of the same name in Lake Päijänne
economy
The city is an important industrial center . It is the location of the paper, wood and metal industries. A factory of the popular candy company Panda is also located just outside the city.

politics
The strongest political force in Jyväskylä since 2017 has been the Finnish Greens , who have 14 out of 67 MPs on the city council, followed by the ousted Social Democrats with 13 and the conservative-liberal National Assembly Party with 12 MPs. The Center Party received 11 seats as in the previous election. The right-wing populist base finns with five, the left alliance with seven, the Christian Democrats with four and finally the Finnish Pirate Party with one mandate are still represented in the city council . The Communist Party of Finland could not defend one mandate and received nothing in the 2017 election.
