Olli Määttä (born August 22, 1994 in Jyväskylä ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League since June 2019 and plays for them in the position of defender . With the Pittsburgh Penguins , with which Määttä was under contract from 2013 to 2019, he won the Stanley Cup in 2016 and 2017 .
Career
Määttä started his career in his hometown Jyväskylä , where he played in the youth department of JYP Jyväskylä . He went through numerous age groups of the club and was already used at the age of 15 for the U18 and U20 selection. Before that, he was able to collect 22 scorer points from 21 games for the U16 team, making him the team's most successful defender.
After starting the 2010/11 season with the U20 selection in the Junior-A-SM-liiga, Määttä signed his first professional contract at the age of 16. He then switched to the D Team , the JYP Jyväskylä farm team , in the Mestis . In 23 games in the second highest Finnish division, Määttä recorded a plus / minus balance of +14, the highest of his team.
In the 2011 CHL Import Draft he was selected as the overall first by the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League and then moved to North America. In the 2011/12 season, Määttä scored five goals and 27 assists. With 32 scorer points, he was the most successful rookie defender and was appointed to the OHL's First All-Rookie Team. After the London Knights had already completed the regular season as the team with the highest points, the team also prevailed in the play-offs and won the J. Ross Robertson Cup . With 23 points from 19 games, Määttä was the top defender in the play-offs.
In the 2012 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the first round in 22nd place by the Pittsburgh Penguins . On September 12, 2012, the defender then signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Penguins.
Määttä, however, returned to London for the 2012/13 season and was able to improve his performance again in contrast to the previous season. With 38 scorer points, he finished the season again as the best point defender of the Knights. Finally, he was able to defend the OHL title in the play-offs with the team and won his second J. Ross Robertson Cup. After leaving the subsequent Memorial Cup tournament, Määttä played three play-off games for the Penguins' farm team, the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins , in the American Hockey League .
For the 2013/14 NHL season , Määttä was able to establish himself straight away in the Pittsburgh Penguins squad and played his first NHL game on October 3, 2013 at the season opener against the New Jersey Devils . Five days later, the defender scored his first two assists in the game against the Carolina Hurricanes before scoring his first goal in the eighth NHL game on October 19. In the 2015/16 season he won the Stanley Cup with the Penguins and was able to repeat this success the following year. After six seasons in the Penguins' jersey, the Finn was transferred to the Chicago Blackhawks in June 2019 together with a five-round vote in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Dominik Kahun .
International
Olli Määttä represented Finland for the first time at the U16 level and was then nominated for his first international tournament for the 2011 U18 World Junior Championship . His plus / minus balance of +4 was the team's best. At the U20 Junior World Championship in the same year he was by far the youngest player in the Finns' squad and remained unpunished in six games.
Määttä was also part of the Finns' squad at the U20 Junior World Championships in 2012 and 2013 , scoring three points in five games in 2013. At the 2014 Winter Olympics , he won the bronze medal with the Finnish national team. He was the most successful defender of his team with three goals and five scorer points.
In addition, he represented his home country at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 , but was eliminated with the team in the group stage.
