Adam Nils Boqvist (born August 15, 2000 in Falun ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League since July 2018 and plays for them in the position of defender .

Career

Adam Boqvist was born in Falun and raised in Hedemora . There he started playing ice hockey at the local Hedemora SK before joining the youth team at Brynäs IF for the 2015/16 season. For the team from Gävle he played in the J20 SuperElit , Sweden's highest-ranking junior league, from the 2016/17 season . There the defender achieved a point average of almost 1.0 per game (24 in 25 games) in the following year, while he made his debut for the men's selection of Brynäs IF in the Svenska Hockeyligan (SHL). There were also seven games on loan at Almtuna IS from the second-class Allsvenskan .

In the subsequent NHL Entry Draft 2018 , Boqvist was selected in eighth position by the Chicago Blackhawks and a little later equipped with an entry contract . As a result, the Swede decided to immediately switch to North American ice by joining the London Knights from the Canadian Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He also established himself as an offensive defender with the Knights, recording 60 scorer points in 54 games and was included in the OHL Second All-Star Team . At the beginning of the 2019/20 season, he moved permanently to the organization of the Blackhawks, who initially used him at the beginning of the season on their farm team from the American Hockey League (AHL), the Rockford IceHogs . In early November, however, the defender was called to Chicago for the first time and thus made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL), where he has been used regularly since then.

International

Boqvist gained his first international experience as part of the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2016 , where he promptly won the gold medal with the Swedish U-17 selection. At U18 level, he took part in the 2017 and 2018 World Championships , with the team winning the bronze medal in 2018 as well as in the meantime at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2017 . At the U18 World Cup in 2018, he was also named the best defender of the tournament. He finally made his debut for the U20 national team of the Tre Kronor at the U20 World Cup 2019 , where he achieved fifth place. Parallel to his appearances at junior level was Boqvist in April 2018 for the first time in the senior team as part of a test game on the ice.
