The 2019/20 NHL season marks the 103rd season of the National Hockey League (NHL). The regular season should run from October 2, 2019 to April 11, 2020, but has been interrupted since March 12, 2020 due to the corona virus pandemic . On May 26, 2020, the regular season was officially declared over and a plan for the resumption of play was presented at the same time. Among other things, this provides for a new playoff format with 24 teams and a modified lottery for the NHL Entry Draft 2020 . The playoffs began in August 2020.
The Boston Bruins won the Presidents' Trophy as the best point team , while Leon Draisaitl became the first German to win the Art Ross Trophy as the best scorer in the league.
League operation
Rule changes
In June 2019, the NHL announced a number of rule changes, particularly affecting video evidence, some of which are due to controversial decisions in the 2019 Stanley Cup playoffs :
- The “Coach's Challenge” introduced for the 2015/16 season will be expanded to include a third category in addition to offside situations and goalkeeping disabilities . From now on, the head coach can check situations in which a goal was scored and the game should presumably have been whistled. This applies to hand passes, playing the puck with a high stick, and cases where the puck was out of play, for example because it touched the safety net. The prerequisite for the check is that the puck does not leave the attack third between the allegedly missed interruption and the goal scored. Furthermore, possibly missed penalties as a game interruption are explicitly excluded from this check.
- The availability of a challenge is no longer dependent on the time-out available to each team. Instead, the trainers can request video evidence as often as they want, but the penalty has been tightened for those cases where the challenge is unsuccessful. In all three categories, the first non-successful verification leads to a small penalty ( minor penalty ; 2 minutes) for delaying the game, each additional equivalent to a double small penalty (4 minutes) type.
- All major penalties ( major penalty or match penalty ; apart from penalties for fist fights) will from now on be checked directly by the referees on the ice in the sense of a video review. They can then either confirm their original decision or reduce it to a small penalty. Furthermore, the referees now have the voluntary option to check double small penalties for high sticks (high sticking) . In particular, it is a matter of finding out whether the stick that caused the injury required for the double penalty actually belonged to the originally punished player.
- If a player loses his helmet during the game , he is required to return to the bench immediately or to put his helmet on again on the field of play. If he does not comply, he should be punished with a small penalty. If he wields the puck or is directly in a duel for it, he should first be allowed to finish this action.
- The defending team is no longer allowed to change if the goalkeeper covers a puck and thus interrupts the game, which was shot from the opposing half of the field towards the goal. Likewise, a change is no longer permitted if a player unintentionally releases his own goal from its anchorage and thus causes an interruption. In both cases, the attacking team may choose on which side of the goal the game should be continued with a face- off. From now on, this also applies to face-offs after an icing and at the beginning of a power play .
- If a goalkeeper deliberately releases his own goal from its anchoring and thus prevents a clear chance to score (breakaway) , this is from now on counted as an automatic goal.
- If the attacking team takes the puck out of play in the attacking third, the game will continue with a face-off in the attacking third instead of in the neutral zone as before.

Interruption
On March 12, 2020, the NHL announced that it would cease gaming operations for the time being in response to the corona virus pandemic . In doing so, she followed suit with the NBA , which had interrupted their playing time the day before. At the same time, the NHL came before the first " ghost games " that regional authorities had already ordered for the home games of the San Jose Sharks and Columbus Blue Jackets . The duration of the interruption was not specified, while officials stated that the goal was to play the playoffs as the game progressed. In this regard, some teams have already been asked to check the availability of their arenas for games in July 2020.
On May 26, 2020, the NHL announced that it had basically agreed with the NHLPA on a new playoff mode with 24 teams, with which the season should continue in July 2020 at the earliest. At the same time, the regular season is over and all statistics and tables are final. There will also be a new version of the draft lottery for the upcoming NHL Entry Draft 2020 . In addition, the NHL published a protocol that is intended to create the framework conditions for a gradual return to gaming operations in accordance with hygiene regulations. In mid-July 2020, a specific schedule was finally published that provides for the start of the playoffs, which are to be played in Toronto and Edmonton , on August 1, 2020.
