The 1919-20 NHL season was the third season of the National Hockey League . The season was played in a preliminary round and a second round with twelve games each. The Ottawa Senators won both halves of the season and therefore did not have to qualify for the finals. Again the Seattle Metropolitans were the opponents. Ottawa won the final series 3-2 and thereby secured the Stanley Cup . The Quebec Bulldogs started playing and got their players back. The Toronto Arenas team was sold to a group around Fred Hambly. The team was originally supposed to be renamed Tecumsehs, but then it was decided to go to Toronto St. Patricks . Joe Malone joined the new team in Quebec and became top scorer again. In Toronto one of the first "bad guys" of the NHL appeared with Cully Wilson . He was expelled from the PCHA after breaking the cheekbone of a Vancouver Millionaires player with a cross check. In the NHL, he was in the penalty box in 23 games for 86 minutes.
