The 1917-18 NHL season was the first season of the National Hockey League . The season was played in a preliminary round with 14 games and a second round with eight games. The National Hockey League (NHL) was founded on November 26, 1917 after a meeting of those responsible for the National Hockey Association (NHA) at the Windsor Hotel in Montreal .
The owners of the Canadiens de Montréal , Montreal Wanderers , Ottawa Senators and Quebec Bulldogs decided to found a new league to exclude Edward J. Livingstone , owner of the Toronto Blueshirts from the NHA, from playing. The Toronto Arenas also joined the league shortly afterwards, while the Quebec Bulldogs initially refrained from participating in active gaming and distributed their players to the other teams. Thus, four teams started the season on December 19, 1917, but after six games the Montreal Wanderers stopped playing because their home ground had fallen victim to a fire.
Both rounds were rated separately, the two league leaders played the NHL representative for the final series of the Stanley Cup in two games . Toronto represented the league well and was able to defeat the representative of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association , the Vancouver Millionaires , with a 3–2 success .
