The 1937/38 NHL season was the 21st season in the National Hockey League . Eight teams played 48 games each. The Stanley Cup won the Chicago Black Hawks after a 3-1 win in the final series against the Toronto Maple Leafs . Chicago's young goalkeeper Alfie Moore was a true fan. He followed his team to the first final game in Toronto at his own expense and also got a ticket. Mike Karakas, the Hawks goalkeeper, broke his toe while warming up and couldn't play. Moore stepped in and the Hawks won the game 3-1. However, since Moore had no professional contract, his use in the second game was prohibited by the NHL. Also before the first final game, there was a fight between Toronto player Baldy Cotton and Chicago coach Bill Stewart . Stewart, then a baseball coach, had been signed at the beginning of the season. He was the first American-born coach to win the Stanley Cup. Another stewart also provided a sporting highlight. Nels Stewart became the first player to score his 300th goal in the NHL.
