The 2011/12 season of the National Hockey League was the 94th season played in the North American professional ice hockey league . The regular season began on October 6, 2011. In Europe, the Anaheim Ducks , Buffalo Sabers , Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers met on October 7th and 8th at the O 2 World in Berlin , the Hartwall Areena in Helsinki and the Ericsson Globe in Stockholm on each other. The subsequent playoffs for the Stanley Cup won the Los Angeles Kings for the first time in their club history on June 11, 2012.

In addition to the renewed season opener in Europe, the sixth open-air game in the history of the league was played on January 2, 2012, here the Philadelphia Flyers met the New York Rangers in Citizens Bank Park . The NHL All-Star Game took place on January 29, 2012 in Ottawa, Canada .

Team changes

The Atlanta Thrashers from Atlanta in the US state of Georgia were relocated to Winnipeg in the Canadian province of Manitoba . It was the second time for the city of Atlanta that an NHL franchise had relocated to Canada, after the Atlanta Flames moved to Calgary in 1980 . Winnipeg is getting an NHL franchise for the second time after the Winnipeg Jets were sold in 1996 and participated in gaming as Phoenix Coyotes . The Winnipeg Jets took Atlanta's place in the Southeast Division .

Increase in the salary cap

Before the start of the season, the National Hockey League announced that the salary cap , the salary cap set by the league for players, had been increased for the seventh time in a row. The maximum wage was increased to $ 64.3 million per team for the 2011/12 season based on the NHL Collective Bargaining Agreement . This represents a significant increase of $ 4.9 million over the previous year. The minimum wage per team is $ 48.3 million.

Entry Draft

The 49th NHL Entry Draft took place on June 24th and 25th, 2011 at the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul , Minnesota . In first place , the Edmonton Oilers selected the Canadian attacker Ryan Nugent-Hopkins . In places two to five followed three strikers and a defender, including fourth place the Swede Adam Larsson , who was selected by the New Jersey Devils . The ten players drafted first included six Canadians and four Swedes. Preseason

Before the regular season opened in Europe on October 7th, a series of friendly matches between NHL teams and European teams took place from September 29th to October 4th as part of the 2011 NHL Premiere Challenge . The NHL teams won six of the seven games. The only defeat related to the New York Rangers , who played four test matches, against EV Zug .

Opening in Europe

The regular season opened on October 7th and 8th, 2011 with kick-off games between the Anaheim Ducks , Buffalo Sabers , Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers at O 2 World in Berlin , Hartwall Areena in Helsinki and Ericsson Globe in Stockholm . It is the fifth season in a row that has opened in Europe.

NHL Winter Classic 2012

The 2011/12 NHL Winter Classic was played between the Philadelphia Flyers and the New York Rangers on January 2, 2012 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia , which is otherwise the home of the Philadelphia Phillies baseball club . The Rangers won the game 3-2 thanks to two goals from Mike Rupp in front of 46,967 spectators.

NHL All-Star Game

The 59th National Hockey League All-Star Game took place on January 29, 2012 at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa , Ontario .

In the plus / minus rating, Patrice Bergeron led with a score of +36. The most power play goals were scored by James Neal , who scored 18 times in the majority. Yevgeny Malkin was the player who shot the most on goal with 339 shots. Outnumbered, Cal Clutterbuck , Adam Henrique and Mike Richards were most successful with four goals each. 23.6% of Curtis Glencross shots found their way into goal. With 235 penalty minutes, Derek Dorsett was the bad guy this season. Erik Karlsson was the most successful defender with 59 assists and 78 points.
