The Kitchener Rangers are a Canadian ice hockey team based in Kitchener , Ontario . The team was founded in 1963 as the New York Rangers' junior team . It has played in one of Canada's three highest junior ice hockey leagues, the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) , since 1977 . The Rangers were able to qualify for the play-offs there except in 1980 and 2001 .

history

When Al MacInnis and Scott Stevens were two future top defenders of the National Hockey League in their squad, they won their first J. Ross Robertson Cup in 1981 in a final against Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds . In 1982 the Rangers were able to get the title in the OHL again and qualified for the second time in a row for the tournament for the Memorial Cup . They were also able to convince there and the fans hoisted "we are number 1 in Canada" flags. It was one of the most glorious moments in Rangers history. In 1984 and 1990 the club reached the final of the OHL playoffs but failed there because of the Ottawa 67’s and the Oshawa Generals .

After that, the Rangers wandered through a long dry spell until they were able to make their way to the finals again in 2003 for the 40th anniversary and met the Ottawa 76ers there again. This time they took the chance to take revenge and won a Best Of Seven series with 4: 1. In the Memorial Cup they shone again and won it for the second time in the history of the club.
