NHL Entry Draft
|
The 2011 NHL Entry Draft was the 49th talent draw of the National Hockey League and took place on June 24 and 25, 2011 at the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul , Minnesota .
The teams of the National Hockey League were able to secure the rights of all North American players born between January 1, 1991 and September 15, 1993, as well as all European players born between January 1, 1990 and September 15, 1993. Only players whose rights were not already held by an NHL team from a draft from previous years were available.
Draft order
The draft order of positions 1 to 14 was determined on April 12, 2011 by the draft lottery. The 14 teams that did not qualify for the playoffs entered this lottery and were seeded in the reverse order of the regular season table. The worst team of the past regular season was in first place and had a chance of 25 percent of winning the lottery and the best of the 14 teams that did not qualify for the playoffs was in 14th place and had a chance of 0.5 percent . The lottery winner, the New Jersey Devils , moved up four places from eighth to fourth in the draft order. The Edmonton Oilers , the worst team of the regular season, retained the first overall draft pick .
The draft order of the 16 playoff participants will be determined after the Stanley Cup final. The Stanley Cup winner is placed on position 30, the final opponent on position 29. The teams that failed in the Conference Finals are sorted into positions 27 and 28. The remaining teams are seeded based on their standings in the regular season. The rule is that the team with the fewest points is in 15th position. The draft order applies to all rounds of the Entry Draft. Teams can acquire draft picks from other teams via transfers, but they can also hand over their own to other teams.
