Nicklas Jensen (born March 16, 1993 in Herning ) is a Canadian - Danish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Jokerit from the Continental Hockey League since July 2017 .
Career
Jensen, whose Canadian- born father Dan moved to Denmark in 1989 and later also took Danish citizenship, was born in Herning in 1993 . There he played in his youth in the ice hockey youth department of Herning IK . His father had also completed his entire professional career in Denmark for this club. He also played soccer until he was 14 .
Already at the age of 15, Nicklas Jensen came to Herning IK's U20 team for permanent appearances. In the 2008/09 season he reached 28 goals and 15 assists in 28 games . Two more missions with a goal success followed in the play-offs . His exceptional talent was recognized by the club when he was appointed to the second senior team for the first time. There he played in the second division 1st division in four games and scored three goals. The Danmarks Ishockey Union , the Danish ice hockey association, awarded him the best U17 striker in the country at the end of the season.
Before the start of the 2009/10 season , Jensen was included in the squad of the first senior team, which was based in the AL-Bank Ligaen . The striker was used in 34 of the 36 season games and posted 26 points, making him the club's second-best scorer behind Thor Dresler . In the play-offs that secured the Blue Fox third place in the championship, another ten points followed in ten games. At the end of the season, Jensen received the league award for rookie of the year . The attacker's talent was not hidden from the scouts of the Canadian Hockey League and so the Oshawa Generals selected him in June 2010 in the first round of the 2010 CHL Import Draft in eighth position.
The native Dane then joined the Generals in the summer of 2010 and completed his first season in the Ontario Hockey League there . He ended this with a nomination for the CHL Top Prospects Game in January 2011, the appointment to the Second All-Rookie Team of the OHL and 58 points in 61 games. In the ten games up to the elimination in the second round of the play-offs against the Niagara IceDogs , another eleven points were added. As a result, Jensen was selected in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft in the first round in 29th place by the Vancouver Canucks . At the end of September 2011, the Power Forward was invited to the Canucks training camp and immediately signed an entry-level contract for the National Hockey League with a term of three years. At the beginning of October, the management of Vancouver sent him back to the Oshawa Generals in the OHL for further development.
After the general's elimination from the OHL playoffs, Jesen was appointed to the roster of the Chicago Wolves farm team from the American Hockey League in spring 2012 and made his debut there in the game against the Houston Eros . In the last main round match against the Peoria Rivermen , the Dane scored a hat trick in a 4-2 win . In the summer of 2013 he was loaned to the Svenska Hockeyligan for the AIK , where he marked a total of 23 scorer points in 50 games in the 2013/14 season , for which he was named the best scorer among the league's junior players. After the end of the season in Sweden, the attacker returned to North America in March 2013 and was appointed to the Vancouver Canucks NHL squad a month later due to numerous injured players. Shortly thereafter, Jensen made his debut in the top division of North America in the game against the San Jose Sharks , before he was sent back to the AHL to the Chicago Wolves after another game. The following year, the left-handed shooter spent most of the time with the Canucks' new farm team, the Utica Comets , but during the season he made 17 NHL appearances for the Canucks and scored his first goal against the New York Islanders in March 2014 .
In January 2016 Jensen was transferred to the New York Rangers in exchange for Emerson Etem and a draft pick within the league . With the Rangers he came in a year and a half to only seven NHL appearances and spent most of the time with the Hartford Wolf Pack in the AHL. As a result, his expiring contract was not extended after the 2016/17 season, so that he joined the Jokerit from the Continental Hockey League in July 2017 .
International
Jensen represented his country of birth, Denmark, at the U18 World Junior Championships in Division I in 2009 and 2010 . For the U20 juniors , he played at the U20 World Junior Championships in Division I in 2010 and 2011 and, after a successful promotion, at the U20 World Junior Championships in 2012 .
At the U18 Junior World Championship in Division I 2010 he was voted the best striker in Group A and the best player in his team. With 13 goals he was also the top scorer of the tournament and with 15 points behind the Norwegian Sondre Olden the second best point collector. Jensen finished the U20 Junior World Championship 2012 as the best scorer of the Danish team that was relegated to Division I.
For the Danish men's selection , he played for the first time in February 2013 at the qualifying tournament for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , in which the Danes, despite the home advantage - the tournament was held in Vojens - only finished third and penultimate behind Slovenia and Belarus . As a result, he took part with the Scandinavians in the 2013 , 2014 and 2016 World Championships in the top division.
