Jari Pekka Kurri (born May 18, 1960 in Helsinki ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player and current - functional . Between 1980 and 1998, the right winger played over 1200 games in the National Hockey League . He spent most of his active career with the Edmonton Oilers , with whom he won the Stanley Cup five times before playing in the NHL for the Los Angeles Kings , New York Rangers , Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and the Colorado Avalanche . With theFinnish national team he took part in numerous world championships as well as in the Olympic Winter Games in 1980 and 1998 , where he won the bronze medal with the team in 1998. Since 2013 he has been working as General Manager at his hometown club Jokerit Helsinki .
Kurri is considered one of the best attackers and one of the best European players of all time. He distinguished himself above all as an outstanding goalscorer, so he holds a number of NHL records in this regard to this day , while at the same time he recorded well over 1000 scorer points . He has been a member of the IIHF Hall of Fame since 2000 and the Hockey Hall of Fame since 2001 .
Career
Jari Kurri played ten years for the Edmonton Oilers , then moved to the Los Angeles Kings , where he played for three full and two half seasons, then played half a season for the New York Rangers and one season each for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and finally for the Colorado Avalanche , where he ended his career in 1998. Before his time in the NHL and for half a season in 1994/95 he played for his hometown club Jokerit Helsinki in the SM-liiga , as well as half a season with HC Devils Milano in Italy .
He won the Stanley Cup five times ( 1984 , 1985 , 1987 , 1988 and 1990 ) with the Oilers, of whom he was committed in round 4 in round 4 in 1980 . He was the first Finn to win the cup. No other player from Europe managed this more often. His best season was 1984/85 , in which he scored 135 points (71 goals, 64 assists ). That year he also scored 19 goals in 18 play-off games, setting an NHL record. In the Conference Finals he scored three hat tricks (three goals in one game), which is an NHL record. A year later he was the league's top scorer with 68 goals.
Kurri was best known as a partner of Wayne Gretzky , who prepared a total of 60% of his goals. After Wayne Gretzky, he is the Edmonton Oilers' second most successful scorer of all time. Kurri reached a total of 1398 scorer points in the NHL, the most points of a European at the time of his career end. He finished 20th in the points and 18th place in goals in the history of the NHL. In the meantime, he was named the best European by Jaromír Jágr in goals, assists and points; and overtaken by his Finnish compatriot, Teemu Selänne , at the goals and points.
In 2001 he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
