Steven Stamkos (born February 7, 1990 in Unionville , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player of Macedonian - Scottish descent. Since 2008, plays center for the Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League , which it in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft at the first position had selected. In the Lightning jersey, he has twice won the Maurice Richard Trophy as the top scorer in the league and has also led the team as captain since the 2013/14 season . With the Canadian national team he won the gold medal at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 .

Career

Beginnings in the junior sector

Stamkos began his career with the Markham Waxers who played in Ontario's top junior class, the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League . In the 2006 OHL Draft, the Sarnia Sting selected him as the first overall, after which he joined the team for the 2006/07 season. In his rookie season he was nominated for the OHL All-Star Game and scored four points there. In the championship he scored 92 points in 63 games. At the end of the season he was appointed to the Canadian junior national team for the U18 World Junior Championship . There the Canadians could only reach fourth place, but Stamkos was the fourth best scorer of the tournament with ten points and thus the best of his team. In the following season he continued to play for the Sting and at the end of 2007 received another invitation for the junior national team to play at the U20 World Junior Championship in 2008 . There he won the gold medal.

Tampa Bay Lightning (since 2008)

For the NHL Entry Draft 2008 , he was considered a promising candidate to be drawn to one of the top places, and was led by the NHL Central Scouting Service and the International Scouting Service in first position. In fact, the elected him Tampa Bay Lightning as a whole First off. A good month after the draft, on July 29th, Stamkos signed a three-year contract with the Lightning. Stamkos made his debut in the NHL at the season opening of the 2008/09 season in Prague when they lost to the New York Rangers . He scored his first goal in the Bolts jersey in October 2008 in the game against the Buffalo Sabers . In February 2009, the Canadian managed the first hat trick of his professional career when he marked all three goals of the Lightning in the 3-5 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks , making him the second youngest player in NHL history to succeed after Bobby Carpenter . Stamkos ended the season with a total of 46 points and a plus / minus statistic of −13.

In the 2009/10 season , Stamkos made his breakthrough in the NHL when he played most of the season in an attack series with Martin St. Louis and Steve Downie . In the first eleven games of the season, the right-shooter scored ten goals and had a series ( scoring streak ) of 18 consecutive games in January and February 2010, each with at least one scorer point. He was the top scorer of the regular season with Sidney Crosby with 51 goals scored and won the Maurice 'Rocket' Richard Trophy . He also played all 82 of his team's games this season and was the best scorer of his team with 95 points and fifth-best within the league. In addition, with this statistic, Stamkos is the third youngest player to score 50 goals in a season.

In the 2010/11 season started Stamkos famously, after 19 games, he had already scored 19 goals and 14 templates and led the scorers list of the NHL before Sidney Crosby. In December 2010, the attacker scored the 100th goal of his NHL career in a 5-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes . In January 2011, Stamkos played in the NHL All-Star Game for Nicklas Lidström's team . The Canadian scored 45 goals this season, making him the second best scorer in the NHL behind Corey Perry of the Anaheim Ducks . In April 2011, Stamkos got his first two goals in the Stanley Cup play-offs in the game against the Pittsburgh Penguins . The Lightning made it to the Eastern Conference final , where Stamkos got a slap shot in the face from Johnny Boychuk in the decisive Game 7 in the series against the Boston Bruins . Despite a broken nose he returned after a short treatment break with a face mask, but could not prevent the 0-1 defeat and the elimination of his team.

The attacker's contract expired on July 1, 2011 and Stamkos became a restricted free agent . As a limited free player, there was the possibility that an offer from another team would be made to him on the basis of a so-called offer sheet . This did not happen and on July 19, 2011 he agreed on a new contract with the Bolts for five years worth around 37.5 million US dollars. On March 13, 2012, Stamkos scored his 50th goal in the 2011/12 season . This made him the sixth player in NHL history to complete more than one season with 50 goals before his 23rd birthday. On March 26, the striker scored his 54th goal of the season, breaking Vincent Lecavalier's club record for the most goals in a season. Just days later, with his winning goal against the Winnipeg Jets in overtime , he broke the NHL record for most goals in overtime within a season, of which Stamkos scored a total of five in the 2011/12 season. Despite his 60 goals and a total of 97 scorer points, the Lightning failed to qualify for the play-offs.

While many NHL players bridged the time of the lockout in the first half of the 2012/13 season at clubs in Europe or in lower-class leagues in North America, Stamkos trained together with a few other professionals in the academy of Gary Roberts . In March 2013, the Canadian scored the 200th goal of his NHL career in the game against the Philadelphia Flyers . He ended the shortened season with a total of 29 goals, making it the second best goalscorer behind Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals .

In the game on November 11, 2013 against the Boston Bruins , Stamkos broke his right shin , then fell out for several months and thus missed participation in the Winter Olympics in Sochi . He made his comeback on March 7, 2014 in the 3-1 loss to the Buffalo Sabers . At the same time he was named the 10th captain of the Tampa Bay Lightning on that day , after the previous captain Martin St. Louis was transferred to the New York Rangers on March 5 in exchange for Ryan Callahan and draft picks .

At the beginning of the 2015/16 season , Stamkos was the third player in franchise history to score his 500th scorer point in the Lightning jersey and a few days later he also played the 500th game of his previous NHL career.

In April 2016, Stamkos was diagnosed with a blood clot near the right collarbone , which required an operation . He only returned to the squad in the seventh game of the Eastern Conference final against the Pittsburgh Penguins , but could not prevent his team from being eliminated. On June 29, 2016, Stamkos extended his expiring contract by eight years. The salary volume is $ 68 million during that period.

A little later he represented his home country at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 and won the gold medal there with the team. In November 2016, the attacker tore his lateral meniscus , as a result, he had another operation and was out for the rest of the season.

During the 2018/19 season, which he also finished with his previous career record of 98 points, Stamkos scored his 384th goal in the Lightning jersey, taking over the franchise record from previous record holder Vincent Lecavalier.
