Ryan Callahan (born March 21, 1985 in Rochester , New York ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Ottawa Senators in the National Hockey League since July 2019 . The right winger previously spent almost eight years with the New York Rangers , which he also led as captain from 2011 to 2014 , and over four seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning . With the US national team , he won the silver medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics .
Career
Callahan played as a youth in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League with the Guelph Storm . He remained loyal to them for four seasons and won the league championship title with the team in 2004.
After Callahan had already been selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2004 by the New York Rangers in the fourth round in 127th place, they brought him at the beginning of the 2006/07 season for the first time in their farm team in the American Hockey League . At the Hartford Wolf Pack , the right winger introduced himself well and also spent part of the 2007/08 season there. In the summer of 2007, the striker won a regular place in the squad in the Rangers training camp and then played 52 games this season.
For the 2011/12 season Callahan was named as the successor to Chris Drury for the 26th team captain in the history of the New York Rangers.
After Callahan could not agree on a contract extension with the Rangers, he was given a first-round and a second-round vote in exchange for Martin St. Louis to the Tampa Bay Lightning before the trade deadline on March 5, 2014 . Callahan was active in Tampa for more than four years until he was transferred to the Ottawa Senators in July 2019 in exchange for Mike Condon . Ottawa also received a five-round vote in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft and Tampa a six- round vote in the same draft. However, due to a back injury, it is considered unlikely that Callahan will ever be able to return to professional sport.
International
Callahan took part in the 2010 Winter Olympics with Team USA and won the silver medal with the team. He was also supposed to be part of the US squad at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 , but canceled early due to an injury.
