Career
High School and College (2004-2010)
Ryan McDonagh played during his junior years from 2004 to 2007 on the ice hockey team at Cretin-Derham Hall High School in his hometown of Saint Paul in the high school league system of the United States. After completing his high school career, McDonagh won the annual Minnesota Mr. Hockey award in calendar year 2007, which honors the best high school player in the US state of Minnesota . He was then selected in the first round in the NHL Entry Draft 2007 in twelfth position by the Montreal Canadiens . McDonagh spent the next three seasons at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and went on the ice for their ice hockey team in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association . On June 30, 2009, the Canadiens gave his rights in a transfer deal together with Pawel Walentenko , Christopher Higgins and Doug Janik in exchange for Tom Pyatt , Michael Busto and Scott Gomez to the New York Rangers . In the 2009/10 season, his last at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the defender led the ice hockey team as team captain on the ice.
New York Rangers (2010-2018)
In the summer of 2010 he was invited to the New York Rangers training camp. In October 2010 he was sent to the Hartford Wolf Pack in the American Hockey League and made his professional debut a short time later. Around three months later he received his first appointment to the Rangers NHL squad and came on January 7, 2011 in the encounter against the Dallas Stars for his first appearance in the National Hockey League . In April 2011 he scored his first goal in the top division of North America in the game against the New Jersey Devils, securing his team's victory and entry into the play-offs. During the lockout in the 2012/13 season , the American played for Barys Astana in the Continental Hockey League .
In the summer of 2013, his contract in New York was extended by six years for a total reported salary of $ 28.2 million. In the following season 2013/14 McDonagh established himself in the back line of the Rangers and was with 43 points scorer the highest point defender of his team. Also in the play-offs , the left shooter showed his offensive potential and was the second best scorers of his team with 17 points when they made it to the Stanley Cup final, where they lost to the Los Angeles Kings . In October 2014, McDonagh was named the new captain of the Rangers, succeeding the departed Ryan Callahan . With his consistent performance, he was again instrumental in the successful performance of the Rangers in the 2014/15 season and won the Presidents' Trophy with the team for the most points after the main round. In the playoffs they failed in the Eastern Conference final against the Tampa Bay Lightning , with McDonagh later stated that he had played the last three games of the series with a broken foot.
Tampa Bay Lightning (since 2018)
At the trade deadline in February 2018, after eight years in New York, McDonagh and JT Miller were handed over to the Tampa Bay Lightning . In return, the Rangers Wladislaw Namestnikow , the young players Libor Hájek and Brett Howden received a first-round vote for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft and another second-round vote. The latter should become one for the first draft round, provided the Lightning win the Stanley Cup in the next two years . McDonagh then signed a new seven-year contract in Tampa in July 2018, which should earn him an average annual salary of $ 6.75 million from the 2019-20 season.
International
McDonagh represented his home country at the 2007 U18 World Junior Championship and the 2009 U20 World Junior Championship . With the U18 team, he won the silver medal in 2007 after losing to Russia in the final and made seven appearances in the course of the tournament and made three assists. Two years later, McDonagh failed with the U20 selection in the quarter-finals against Slovakia .
