Luke Schenn (born November 2, 1989 in Saskatoon , Saskatchewan ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League since July 2019 and for their farm team, the Syracuse Crunch , in the American Hockey League plays in the position of defender .
Career
Luke Schenn played at the beginning of his career with the Saskatoon AAA Contacts before moving to the high-class Canadian junior league WHL to the Kelowna Rockets in 2005 . There he had a solid first season and reached the second round of the playoffs with the team . In the 2006/07 season he was able to develop significantly, became the best defender of the Rockets and was the third-best scorer with 29 points in a weak team that occupied the penultimate place in the league.
In spring 2007, he played for the Canadian youth national team for the first time when he was appointed to the squad for the U18 World Cup . Canada finished fourth and Schenn was the second best scorer among the tournament's defenders with three goals. In the summer he was part of a Canadian U20 selection that was to play against a Russian team of the same age in the eight-game Super Series 2007 . Schenn played in all the games in the series, which Canada won with seven wins in a draw. A few months later he joined the Canadian junior national team at the U20 World Cup and won the gold medal. He finished the tournament with the best plus / minus value of his team.
In the WHL, he built on his good performance from the previous season, was also able to improve his offensive performance and set a new personal best with seven goals. The Rockets played a stronger season than last year and reached the playoffs again, but failed in the first round. At the end of the season Schenn was appointed to the WHL West Second All-Star Team.
In June 2008, Schenn was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2008 in the first round in fifth position by the Toronto Maple Leafs . Only a few months later, he secured himself a regular place in the NHL squad of Toronto during the training camp and made his debut in October 2008. However, the defense relied on skater-savvy and physically small players, to which Schenn was not one.
On June 23, 2012, Schenn was transferred to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for James van Riemsdyk , where he was in the squad together with his brother Brayden . During his fourth season in Philadelphia, Luke Schenn was transferred again, this time together with Vincent Lecavalier in exchange for Jordan Weal and a third-round vote in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft to the Los Angeles Kings . In Los Angeles, the defender ended the 2015/16 season, but received no additional contract from the Kings. As a result, he signed a two-year contract with the Arizona Coyotes as a free agent in July 2016 . He fulfilled this and then switched to the Anaheim Ducks in the same way . There, however, he did not succeed in earning a regular place, so that in November 2018 he was sent to the American Hockey League (AHL) for the first time in his career , to the farm team of the Ducks, the San Diego Gulls . About two months later, the Ducks gave him, including a seven-round vote in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, to the Vancouver Canucks and received Michael Del Zotto in return . There the Canadian ended the season and moved to the Tampa Bay Lightning as a free agent for one season in July 2019 .
Schenn is considered a defensive defender who has mastered the physically tough game. His weaknesses are on the offensive, where he still has to develop.
