James van Riemsdyk (born May 4, 1989 in Middletown , New Jersey ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Philadelphia Flyers in the National Hockey League since July 2018 . The left winger was previously active for six years for the Toronto Maple Leafs and just under two and a half years for the Philadelphia Flyers, who had selected him in second position in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft .
Career
Van Riemsdyk played for the Christian Brothers Academy and the Brick Hockey Club , both of which were based in New Jersey , during his high school years . For the 2005/06 season he moved to the USA Hockey National Team Development Program of the US Ice Hockey Association , where he went through the various junior national teams. As a result, he took part in the U18 Junior World Championship in 2006 . There, the Americans defeated, among other things, Erik Johnson and Patrick Kane , who were later elected in the NHL Entry Drafts in 2006 and 2007 , in the final of Finland 3-1 and won the world title. The following year van Riemsdyk played both in the U18 Junior World Championship , where he won the silver medal and shared the top scorer title with his teammate Colin Wilson , and at the U20 Junior World Championship , where he won the bronze medal.
In the summer of 2007, the winger was then available in the NHL Entry Draft 2007 for the franchises of the National Hockey League and was selected immediately after his teammate Patrick Kane in second overall position by the Philadelphia Flyers . However, Van Riemsdyk was not signed by the Flyers, after which he went to the University of New Hampshire . There he plays alongside his studies for the university team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . At the end of 2007 he was reappointed to the national team for the U20 World Junior Championship in 2008 .
At the end of the 2008/09 season, the attacker made his professional debut when he played eleven games for the Philadelphia Phantoms , the Flyers' farm team , in the American Hockey League . From the following season he was regularly used in the NHL and reached with Philadelphia in his first season directly the final for the Stanley Cup in the playoffs 2010 , but lost there to the Chicago Blackhawks . After only two and a half years, the Flyers gave it to the Toronto Maple Leafs in June 2012 and received Luke Schenn in return . Van Riemsdyk established himself as a regular goalscorer at the Maple Leafs, reaching the mark of 30 goals for the first time in the 2013/14 season before increasing this best to 36 goals in the 2017/18 season.
After the Maple Leafs did not renew his expiring contract, van Riemsdyk returned to the Philadelphia Flyers as a free agent in July 2018 . There he signed a five-year contract that should bring him an average annual salary of $ 7 million.
