The 33rd Ice Hockey World Championships of the U20 Juniors of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF were the Ice Hockey World Championships of 2009 in the age group of under-20s (U20). Between December 14, 2008 and January 15, 2009, a total of 34 national teams took part in the five tournaments of the top division and divisions I and II.

The world champion was for the 15th time in total and for the fifth time in a row the team of Canada , who defeated Sweden 5-1 in the final . The German team could not hold the class after the promotion in the previous year and was relegated to Division I, Switzerland took first place in Group A of Division I and thus rose to the top division. Austria was also first in Group B of Division I and also rose to the World Cup group.

The U20 World Cup was held from December 26, 2008 to January 5, 2009 in the Canadian capital Ottawa in Scotiabank Place (19,153 places) and in the Ottawa Civic Center (9,862 places). Ten national teams took part, playing in two groups of five teams each. Canada won its 15th world title and secured the title for the fifth time in a row.

After the group games in the preliminary round, the two group winners qualified directly for the semi-finals. The runners-up and thirds in the group each played a qualifying game for participation in the semi-finals. The fourth and fifth of the group games contested - taking the result of the direct encounter from the preliminary round with them - the relegation round and determined two relegated to Division I.
