history

Already during the times of the Soviet Union there was a selection team from the Lithuanian republic that competed against teams from other republics, for example as part of the Winter Parkiade. As an independent national team, it emerged from the U20 national ice hockey team of the Commonwealth of Independent States , which played its last games at the Junior World Cup in 1992 and for which players from today's Lithuania were eligible to play. During the tournament, the Soviet Union was transferred to the Commonwealth of Independent States and the junior national team played the tournament as the CIS to the end. In the course of 1992 the Lithuanian U20 national team was founded, which in 1993 took part in a world championship for the first time.

Up to and including 1998, the U20 national team covered the entire junior area at the World Championships, while the U19 national team took part in the Junior European Championships. Since the introduction of the U18 World Championships in 1999 , the Lithuanian U20 national team has only represented the U20 junior level at world championships.

The Lithuanian junior team first had to take part in qualifying for the C World Championship as a new team. After the team played in the C2 and D groups from 1995 onwards, the 1998 home tournament in Kaunas and Elektrėnai made it to the C group for the first time and the team was transferred to Division II in 2001 when it switched to the current division system . In the third division, the Lithuanians remained - with the exception of the 2006 World Cup - until 2007, when they were promoted to Division I for the first time. But neither at the 2008 World Cup nor at the other attempts in 2011 and 2018 , the team from the Baltic States was able to stay in Division I.
