The 24th ice hockey world championships of the U20 juniors of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF were the ice hockey world championships of the year 2000 in the age group of the under-20s (U20). Between December 13, 1999 and January 15, 2000, a total of 35 national teams took part in the four A to D group tournaments of the World Cup.
The world champion was the Czech team for the first time , who defeated Russia 1-0 in the shootout in the final . The German team missed promotion from the B to the A group due to the defeat in a direct comparison against the later promoted Belarus and took second place. The Switzerland finished sixth in the A group, Austria won the tournament in the C group, an increase in the Group B on.

The U20 World Cup was held from December 25, 1999 to January 4, 2000 in the Swedish cities of Skellefteå and Umeå . The game was played in the Skellefteå Kraft Arena (6,001 seats) in Skellefteå and the Umeå ishall in Umeå with 5,400 seats.
Ten national teams took part in the tournament, playing in two groups of five teams each. The world championship title was secured for the first time by the Czech Republic, which won the final just 1-0 in the penalty shootout against Russia.

After the group matches - each team played four of them - the preliminary round, the first four in each group qualified for the quarter-finals, which, like the other rounds, were then played in the knockout system. The fifth of the group games disputed a relegation according to the " best-of-two " mode and determined who was relegated to the B group.

Relegation round
The relegation to Division I was carried out in the " Best-of-Two " mode. In the event of a tie after winning games, the second game was continued with a sudden death overtime and, if necessary, a penalty shoot-out to determine who was relegated.
