Michael "Mike" Tavares Ribeiro (born February 1, 1980 in Montréal , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player of Portuguese descent who played 1141 games for the Canadiens de Montréal , Dallas Stars , Washington Capitals during his active career between 1997 and 2017 , Phoenix Coyotes and Nashville Predators in the National Hockey League on the position of the center .

Career

As a junior, Ribeiro played with the Huskies de Rouyn-Noranda in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . In the 1998 NHL Entry Draft , the Canadiens de Montréal elected him in the second round as 45. Early on, management tried to use him in the American Hockey League with the Fredericton Canadiens , but he soon returned to the LHJMQ, where he joined the Remparts de in 1999 Québec changed. For the 1999/2000 season , Ribeiro finally switched to the professional field, but came only sporadically to assignments with the Canadiens de Montréal. Mostly he played on the AHL farm team with the Citadelles de Québec and later with the Hamilton Bulldogs . It was not until the 2002/03 season that he made his breakthrough. During the NHL lockout in the 2004/05 season, the striker played in Finland for the Espoo Blues .

On September 30, 2006, Ribeiro was transferred to the Dallas Stars . In return, the Finnish defender Janne Niinimaa moved to Montréal. The change was made because the Canadiens had to complain about many weighty losses on the defensive at this time. In Dallas, he became the team's best scorer in the 2006/07 season , also helped by the temporary absence of players like Mike Modano or Brenden Morrow . In the summer of 2007 he was initially given a one-year contract as a restricted free agent for an estimated $ 2.8 million. With this he would have become an unrestricted free agent after the 2007/08 season and would have been able to choose his club completely freely. However, on January 7, 2008, he extended his contract with the Dallas Stars by five years to $ 25 million. On June 22, 2012, Ribeiro was given by the Stars in exchange for Cody Eakin and a second-round vote for the 2012 NHL Entry Draft to the Washington Capitals .

In July 2013, Ribeiro signed a four-year deal with the Phoenix Coyotes . However, the Coyotes bought him out of the contract back in July 2014, due to misconduct on the part of Ribeiro. After the Coyotes paid him off in July 2014, he signed a one-year contract with the Nashville Predators a little later , where he earned around $ 1 million. The following summer of 2015, Ribeiro signed a new contract with the Predators for $ 7 million for two years. During the 2015/16 season, the Canadian played his 1,000th game in the NHL. During his third season in Nashville, management sent the striker over the waiver to the AHL, where he had last played in the 2002/03 season.

After Ribeiros alcohol addiction soon became public knowledge, Ribeiro withdrew from the public for some time and joined a rehabilitation program of the NHL. A month later he was briefly arrested in Miami Beach. He then worked as a coach for the youth teams of the Nashville Predators.
