Career

Eakin was selected in the 2006 Bantam Draft of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in the first round in sixth position by the Swift Current Broncos . The player completed another season for a junior team from his hometown of Winnipeg and only moved to the Broncos late in the 2006/07 WHL season , for which he was regularly used from the following season . In the NHL Entry Draft 2009 he was selected in the third round in a total of 85th position by the Washington Capitals . The offensive player had his most successful season in the Western Hockey League in the 2009/10 season , when he scored 47 goals and a total of 91 points in 71 games .

On January 9, 2011, the Swift Current Broncos transferred him to the Kootenay Ice in exchange for five players and three draft picks . With the Ice Eakin won the Ed Chynoweth Cup , the championship trophy of the WHL, in the 2010/11 season . At the subsequent Memorial Cup 2011 he lost to the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors with the Kootenay Ice in the semifinals .

In the 2011/12 season Eakin was first used for the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League ; he spent most of the season with Washington's farm team Hershey Bears in the American Hockey League . On June 22, 2012, Cody Eakin was transferred from the Capitals to the Dallas Stars along with a second-round vote for the 2012 NHL Entry Draft . Washington received Mike Ribeiro in return .

In June 2017, Eakin was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft . With the team he surprisingly reached the final of the Stanley Cup in the 2018 playoffs , but lost to the Washington Capitals there. After almost three years in Nevada, the attacker was handed over to the Winnipeg Jets from his hometown in February 2020 in exchange for a conditional four-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2021 . Should the Jets reach the playoffs in the 2019/20 season or equip Eakin with a new contract in the summer of 2020, the right to vote should become one for the third round.

Eakin represented his home country with the Canadian national team for the first time at the U18 World Junior Championship in 2009 , where he finished fourth with his team. At the U20 Junior World Championship in 2011 he won the silver medal with the Canadians after a final defeat against the Russian selection .
