Nikolaj Ehlers (born February 14, 1996 in Aalborg ) is a Danish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Winnipeg Jets from the National Hockey League since September 2014 .

Career

Ehlers began his career with the junior teams of the Swiss club EHC Biel . He made his NLA debut at the age of 16 when he played for Biel's first team in the 2012/13 season. Most of the season, however, he spent with the U20 team.

After he was pulled in 6th place by the Halifax Mooseheads in the 2013 CHL Import Draft , Ehlers moved to the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ). In his first year in the LHJMQ, Ehlers won various personal awards, such as the Michael Bossy trophy as the most promising player in the league. He was also awarded the Coupe RDS , the Trophée Michel Bergeron and finally the title CHL Rookie of the Year and was elected to the LHJMQ Second All-Star Team . In the ranking for the upcoming NHL Entry Draft 2014 he was ranked 22nd and ultimately selected 9th by the Winnipeg Jets .

In September 2014 he signed a three-year entry contract with Winnipeg Jets , but initially stayed with Mooseheads in the LHJMQ. There he won the Paul Dumont Trophy as an outstanding leader in his second year , led the playoff scorer list with 31 points and was appointed to the LHJMQ First All-Star Team .

With the start of the 2015/16 season, Ehlers is in the NHL squad of the Jets. He finished his first season with 38 scorer points from 72 games, making him the jets rookie with the highest points this year. After significantly increasing this statistic in the following year with 64 scorer points, he signed a new contract in Winnipeg in October 2017, which - starting with the 2018/19 season - brought him an average annual salary of 6 million US dollars over the next seven years should.

International

On an international level, Ehlers made his debut at the U18 World Championship in Division IA in 2013 , where he made it into the top division with the Danish selection, as did at the end of the year at the U20 World Championship in Division IA in 2014 . After winning the silver medal at the 2014 World Junior A Challenge with Denmark's U19s , he took part in the 2015 U20 World Cup with the U20s and finished eighth there. The attacker made his debut for the senior national team in his home country at the 2016 World Cup , where he also finished eighth with the team. He was also part of the Danish squad at the qualifying tournament for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games , but missed qualifying with third place.

family

His father, Heinz Ehlers , was a professional ice hockey player for more than 20 years and worked as a coach in Switzerland. Nikolaj's older brother Sebastian currently plays for the Aalborg Pirates . He also has a younger sister, Caroline.
