Joshua T. "Josh" Morrissey (born March 28, 1995 in Calgary , Alberta ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Winnipeg Jets in the National Hockey League since October 2013 .

Career

youth

Josh Morrissey was born in Calgary and played for the Calgary Royals in his youth . His younger brother Jake (* 1997) also plays ice hockey, in the position of goalkeeper . 2010 Josh Morrissey was selected in the Bantam Draft of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in sixth position by the Prince Albert Raiders after he had led all defenders of his age group in the Province of Alberta in the 2009-10 season in scorer points . For reasons of age, Morrissey also completed the 2010/11 season with the Royals before he joined the Raiders and made his WHL debut there at the end of the season.

Western Hockey League

As a rookie , he scored 38 scorer points in 68 games in his first full WHL season, leading all defenders on his team. He also took part with Team Canada Pacific in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2012 , where he finished fifth before joining the squad of the U18 national team of Canada, which won the bronze medal at the U18 World Cup in 2012 . In the same year he also represented his country at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament , in which the team won the gold medal. In the following season 2012/13, his draft year, Morrissey was again the best defender of his team with 47 points scorer and was again part of the U18 selection, which won the gold medal at the U18 World Cup . At this U18 World Cup, he led all players in the plus / minus statistics (+10) and all defenders in goals (3) and points (7). Morrissey was also awarded the Daryl K. (Doc) Seaman Trophy and the CHL Scholastic Player of the Year Award as a player in the Raiders , and took part in the CHL Top Prospects Game . In the subsequent NHL Entry Draft 2013 , the defender was selected in the first round in 13th position by the Winnipeg Jets , who provided him with an entry contract in October of the same year .

For the time being, however, Morrissey returned to the Raiders for another season, where he reached personal highs with 28 goals (season high for defenders of the league) and 45 assists. In addition, he represented his home country for the first time in the U20 division at the turn of the year and finished fourth with the Canadian selection at the 2014 U20 World Cup . After the end of the WHL season he was elected to the WHL East First All-Star Team and shortly afterwards appointed to the squad of St. John's IceCaps , the farm team of the Winnipeg Jets from the American Hockey League (AHL). There the Canadian made his professional debut a little later and reached the final of the Calder Cup with the IceCaps , in which, however, they lost to the Texas Stars . In the following preparation for the 2014/15 season, Morrissey was sorted out surprisingly quickly from the possible NHL line-up - according to his own statement due to a lack of fitness - and thus returned to the WHL for another year.

It started in Prince Albert, but was given to the Kelowna Rockets in a multi-player and draft-option swap in December 2014 . After winning the gold medal at the U20 World Championship in 2015 and being elected to the tournament's All-Star Team, he also won the WHL championship with the Kelowna Rockets and thus the Ed Chynoweth Cup , with himself in the WHL West Second All-Star Team was appointed. This was synonymous with participation in the Memorial Cup 2015 , in which the Rockets failed in the final against the Oshawa Generals .

Winnipeg Jets

At the end of the 2014/15 season, Morrissey finally switched to the organization of the Winnipeg Jets and spent almost the entire 2015/16 season with their new farm team, the Manitoba Moose from the AHL. In March 2016, however, the defender was appointed to the squad for the first time and subsequently made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL). With the beginning of the following season 2016/17 Morrissey established himself in the squad of the Jets and did not miss any of the 82 competitive games this season. He then made his debut for the Canadian senior team at the 2017 World Cup , where he won the silver medal with the team.

In September 2019, Morrissey signed a new eight-year contract in Winnipeg that should earn him an average annual salary of $ 6.25 million.
