The St. John's IceCaps were a Canadian ice hockey franchise in St. John's in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador . It was a member of the American Hockey League between 2011 and 2015 before the team returned to Winnipeg as Manitoba Moose .

history

In May 2011 it was announced that the investor group True North Sports and Entertainment had acquired the rights to the Atlanta Thrashers franchise from the National Hockey League in order to relocate it to Winnipeg , Manitoba . The group of investors then decided to relocate the Winnipeg-based AHL team Manitoba Moose as well. St. John's was chosen as the new location for the AHL franchise, where an AHL team was already active from 1991 to 2005 with the St. John's Maple Leafs . In addition, from 2005 to 2008 the St. John's Fog Devils from the junior league Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec played in the Mile One Center , the new venue for the IceCaps. The St. John's crew served as the Winnipeg Jets farm team .

The driving force behind the relocation of the Manitoba Moose to St. John's was former Prime Minister of Newfoundland and Labrador, Danny Williams , who announced on June 2, 2011 that the Manitoba Moose AHL team would be relocating to St. John's . A day later, the city council approved this move and, on June 10, 2011, the AHL Board of Governors unanimously approved it . The relocation was officially announced the same day at an event held at Williams' Mile One Center and the team's new general manager, Craig Heisinger.

In July 2011, Keith McCambridge , previously assistant coach at the Manitoba Moose under Claude Noël , was introduced as head coach. On July 29, 2011, the team name St. John's IceCaps was published by President and CEO Danny Williams. At the same time the official logo of the IceCaps was presented.

Jason Jaffray was named the first team captain in franchise history. The first league game of the IceCaps was played on October 7, 2011, which they won 4-1 away at the Providence Bruins . Defender Mark Flood scored the first ever goal for St. John's .

As part of the restructuring of the American Hockey League, the franchise returned to Winnipeg for the 2015/16 season and henceforth operates under the name Manitoba Moose , which was used from 1996 to 2011 . In addition, the Hamilton Bulldogs took over the previous identity of the IceCaps and continued to run them as a different franchise .
