The Capital District Islanders were an American ice hockey franchise of the American Hockey League based in Troy , New York . The Islanders' venue was the Houston Field House .
history
The Capital District Islanders were founded in 1990 as a franchise of the American Hockey League . As the International Hockey League continued to expand in the Great Lakes area and became a strong competitor for the AHL, the league decided to set up a second franchise in the region, whereupon the New York Islanders from the National Hockey League were given the opportunity to set up their own farm team in Troy , New York , which is why they broke off the cooperation with the reigning Calder Cup winner Springfield Indians .
After the Islanders still missed the playoffs in their first season, they reached the first playoff round in the 1991/92 and 1992/93 seasons, in which they were subject to the Springfield Indians and the Adirondack Red Wings . In 1993, the owner of the Capital District Islanders, Michael Cantanucci, sold the franchise to entrepreneur Albert Lawrence, who relocated the team to Albany , New York , where it has since played in the AHL under the name Albany River Rats .
